Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello everyone. I'm recent to aquarium owning. ( had one as a child but that doesn't count.) I've currently 100 lt and 40 lt tanks. They are both tropical but my 40 lt is mainly for fry and breeders. I've a few varieties including guppies, betta, neons and tetra ( about 30 in total ). I got the 100 lt as a learning tank cause I'm hoping next year to do a home built 500+ lt tank. I've a few ideas for it but before i start i wanted to make sure I got it right. I'm learning with the 100 lt and joining here to make sure I get the knowledge I'll need for the big build.

I've a male and female. Both are veil tails. He is the most docile and intelligent fish in the tank. He doesn't bother with any of the other fish. Not even the female. He spends most of his time interacting with who ever goes close to the tank. He's more interested in people than fish. She isn't so placid. She is the mother of the tank. Any bad behavior and she will stop. She doesn't nip or attack unless the others get too playful or aggressive and then she steps in to end it. She especially keeps the male guppies in line.

The tetra wind up the loaches who in turn get the guppies all fired up and then the betta has to step in and calm things down. She is like a cranky school head mistress. The male betta is a gentle giant. He really is a big brute compared to the others. The tetra are terrified of him. He is much bigger than them so they leave him alone. I got lucky with them. They have been a wonderful addition. I didn't realize keeping fish was so much work and fun. They aren't as easy as I initially thought ( big issues at the moment , sick tank causing mayhem).

@bibsun, there was an incident over the xmas. While I was away, my sister was feeding the fish for me. One of the days her son bumbped the tank gently (she said, i doubt it though, I'm convinced the child is a demon)the wood feature fell over and landed on the 3 Kuhli that had made the base of the wooden feature their home. because they had burrowed into the sub, she didnt se them and as a result they died. when I arrived home a couple of days later there was already a bacterial bloom starting, i did a tank clean and water change but that disturbed the dead bodies which had aleady broken down and disintegrated. Ive been doing partial water changes and clean up every day for the last week but there is still bits of disitegrated fish floating around when the plants are moved and the bacterial bloom is still going strong. The water parameters are as expected as a result, the amonia and PH are a little high but because of the bloom and fish parts already messing up the water, I cant use chemicals to fix it, Its why I put up a seperate thread requesting amano shrimp, I got the advice that they will help rectify the problem naturally and as I was already looking at getting some shrimp I thought now would be the best time. Its a bit more hurried than i would have liked and I cant seem to find them, ( a couple of the lads on here have helped though). hopefully they will help sort the problem.
