Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

welcome to the forum tropicalhobbie, i hope you enjoy your time with us and learn more about your hobby, just as a quick bit of information for you start saving money now and get bigger aquariums as The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) can grow very big and reaches a length of at least 1.2 m / 4ft. There are reports that they can grow to twice that size. They seldom grow larger then 1 m / 3.3ft when kept in aquariums. The species grows quickly and will soon need a large aquarium even if you buy a small specimen. One year old fish can easily be more then 40 cm / 1.3 ft long. You might be able to slow their growth rate a little by feeding them less often but they will still grow to huge catfish and you will need an aquarium of at least 1000L / 200 gallon if you want to keep Tiger Shovelnose Catfish.
and as In the wild, Silver Arowana may reach upwards of 4 feet /120 cm in length, and a little over ten pounds in weight. The growth rate in the Silver Arowana is about two inches (5cm) a month during their first year.Silver Arowanas need the best of water conditions to ensure the best coloration and finnage. These are not beginner's fish! Ammonia and nitrites must be kept at zero, and the water must be clean and clear. The tank should also be huge to house such a fish and any tank smaller than a 55 gallon will stunt their growth, at full size an adult silver arowana should have a tank of 300 gallons.
i hope this hasnt scared you too much as the average clearseal 4 foot tank will be quickly outgrown by these fish as depending on the width and height of your tank you have your current water volume would be between 100l - 180l approx, which is way too small for these fish.

Welcome. Im just getting back into the scene myself after a 6 year break, so only been using the forum the last couple of weeks. Im still in the planning stages of seting up a planted aquarium.

I have to say everyone on here is great at sharing their expertise, you will learn lots. You definitely have jumped in the deep end, my first tank was a 2ft community tank! You will have many hours of pleasure from fish keeping, its a great hobby. Have you any pics of your tanks?
