Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

:woohoo:
I was given a present of Fluval spec (tiny tank) and managed to get quickly addicted. I now have a 60ltr Juwel tank. Had a couple of problems with light, twice in two weeks had to be replaced, seemed to be problem with the new units Juwel are doing (all one unit). Guys in shop kindly gave me cover from different tank that works a treat.

I have been surfing your site for a little while and have had a lot of helpful info : although sometimes overwhelmed by the detail and confused cause its over my head... but i reckon life is a big learning curve anyway.

I have two guppies, two dannios, two clown loach, three mollies, two (surviving from the start) neon tetra, my adored Cory Doras and bristlenose plec and of course a rescued gold gourami, (being bullied in my sisters tank).

Had a problem in the last week or two with lack of oxygen : as the filter in the tank is submerged it doesn't agitate the water. Up to now wasn't a problem, but with a fear of losing my fish i visited petshop today and was given an 'air diffuser for pump' which is definately doing the job, but im just worried it will create another problem.

any suggestions ? bearing in mind my beginner status, don't make it too complicated

Hi Cassie, short for Cassandra?

Welcome to the Forum, if Oxygen levels are causing problems, you can resolve it by getting a small, cheap internal Filter that will send the Water from one side of the Tank to the other, this will be more efficient if you remove the Filter Media as there will be nothing inside to get clogged and slow it down, having the housing around it will also prevent any strays from getting sucked into it.

You really don't, or shouldn't need an Air Pump etc to accomplish this, you could also use a very small power head, this will attach to the side of the Tank and circulate Water and Air together.

Kev.

hi cassie, is it a juwel Rekord 600 you have? as the flow nozzel on the filter can be turned upwards to agitate the water , surface movement on the water is better by far than having air stones.

Welcome to the forums.

Thanks for info ... It's a Juwel Korall which is just a 60ltr tank. Came with a bio flow mini . As this filter is completely underwater there is no way of agitating water so i was given this little attachment to go on outflow nozzle. It's has little clear straw type piece that goes out of water and draws oxygen in. It's certainly smaller than putting another filter or even air pump in but my lack of knowledge just made me wonder (a) why this filter would be supplied with a tank if you need water agitated for oxygen + (b) is there such a thing as too much oxygen.
Otherwise seems to work a treat

Really appreciate the advice lads
