Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Name is Steve, and I been keeping fish for about a little over two months.
I went to the pet store one day with one of my sons and left with two gold fish and a little tank.
I since upgraded to a 68ltr tank and it now home 10goldfish.
Ten days after i had bought my first tank i went to Dublin and picked up a marine tank, crazy I know but I so wanted to get two clown fish. The tank came with 20kg of live rock, 2 clown fish, a humbug, chromis, and a coral boxing banded shrimp it was a good start and a big leap into the unknowing. The fish and shrimp are fully growing as the owner had them for the past four years.
I also have added a yellow tang And a Molly plus lots of snails and blue leg crabs.
I know my 120ltr tank is to small for this so I'm looking to upgrade to a bigger tank when I see the right one come along. My tang is getting bigger and I only have it a month.
Thanks for reading
Steve

Marine a great but take a lot off time and looking after just make sure you have a great maintenance routine and keep up the water changes
Also key to marines in a great diet but also do not over feed
Keep an eye out on the for sale section as there is some great tanks that come up every now and again
Or maybe even put up a wanted post and you never know someone might have something that would suit you
What size are you thinking?
I would say that if you are going to do it have a good think about it and try get as big off a tank as you can as you will also want to go up

Just to be picky, what you have are Clown Fish. Lots of people hear Names but never see them in print, the spelling for Cichlids, pronounced sick lids, has to be seen to believed.

Welcome Steve.
While I cannot advise regarding the marine, I can only say about the 68l tank that you have and notice that you are probably overstocked with as much as 9 goldfish

Rather than jump head first, I suggest you do some research beforehand about the set-ups you have in mind and gather as much information possible, that will save you headaches and money in the long run.

But saying that im aloud to do what i want with the marine tank as long as i run it past her before hand so im happy.
Im looking to upgrade the marine tank to about 360LTR and up to 600LTR max. We don't think we want a sump because we have 4kids aged 4 and under. And having 100LTR or so in a sump that they could make their way into. Even with doors ect that we could lock we still would not be happy it only takes one time to not lock it for something to go wrong. Also the room that we will prob end up keeping the tank in, is the kids playroom/family tv room.
It will also be just a fish only tank with LR as the main filter. I will use a canister filter also to help remove phos and to run any carbon or other media. I have been looking at Rio400 which look like a nice tank and try and get something along them lines but maybe go the 2nd hand market.
P.S the Molly is doing great. Getting along with all the fish even the Humbug which can be a bit of a bully but he dont seem to want swim after our Molly.
Thanks
Steve

Also I like to add Molly's are very funny to watch when you have Clown Fish in the tank. My Molly is orange and blends in with the other 2. It swims about an inch or two behind the Clowns and does what every they do, it's like they have a shadow.
Oh my wife saw your post kev. She wanted to send you a message back
