Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I joined this forum years ago back when I was looking for used tanks for my gerbil clan (now all gone and/or rehomed). However it is only now that I've added some fish to our household!
We are a young family of 3 - myself, my husband and our little daughter, for whom we bought the fish. We live in Dublin and have had dogs, gerbils and hamsters in the past. I and my husband both had goldfish in our families growing up. We currently have six baby fancy goldfish - two demekins (one black, one which is turning out to be chocolate), 3 ryukins (two calico, one red/white which actually might be a fantail) and one runty little one which might be a poor example of a ryukin, a poor example of an oranda or maybe even a cross of these (orange with rapidly disappearing black markings). They have proved well nigh impossible to photograph! The light conditions in our living room are just not conducive to a good photo, it seems.
We have had some teething problems with new tank syndrome due to poor advice when buying the fish. However things seem to be settling down now thanks to the help of this forum and we hope to be able to enjoy our lovely little fish for some time to come. We are really looking forward to watching them grow and change. As I type this they are all happily sleeping except for the little orange runty guy who is busy digging up what's left of their plants from the gravel. Not like it matters much, they have already eaten them down to nothing but stems!

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

You can do a great display using plastic plants as an option.
Check out the below article form Proactical Fishkeeping about some recent artificial plants.
They have come a long way from the old days and can look very real

Regarding artificial plants - there actually are some in there along with the real ones which have been eaten. The live plants were added to boost the oxygen in the tank. Maybe we won't need to replace them now that the new tank syndrome problems seem to be settling down. We might get more artificial ones instead. We'll see.
