Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Getting back into the hobby

Hi all,

My names James and I am a fishaholic!

Well at least I used to be, but moving home a few years ago saw me selling my last tank as I had no room for it in the new apartment.

Now 3 moves and 4 years later I think I am sticking around in this house for a while and I have plenty of room. So having successfully convinced the the wife it's finally time to get myself a tank and get back into the hobby.

I am into American Cichlids and compatible catfish and want to set up something around the 600+ litre mark which I plan on stocking with some decent sized fish as I try to do the balancing act of big colorful Cichlids and peace in the aquarium!

As it's a big tank and I am on a tight budget it's probably going to be a DIY job. From next week I will be trying to source the glass and get this show on the road.

Hopefully I can call on the advise of the more experienced fishkeepers here and share my experience as I build.

Of course if I happen across a big tank on the for sale section here that won't break the bank I may just go for that!

Hi newbejkjimk although I have generally kept larger cichlids I have kept new world dwarfs such as apistogramma sp and rams.

I would add some Bristlenose plecs . If you want more cichlids than possibly some Satanoperca Leucosticta as I have seen them live peacefully with Rams even though they grow a lot larger.
You may get away with a single male Apistogramma if he has somewhere to hide out away from the others.

You could also consider a single specimen of Laetacara Curviceps although be aware that these can be more aggressive fish that may dominate the tank. It's hard to say, sometimes cichlids will find their own balance and pecking order, but it just takes one aggressive individual to ruin the tank.

Usually with rams I would suggest some tetras but the Festivums probably wouldn't like that. For me the Festivums complicate matters as they are a bit finicky like angelfish.

I am sure some of the people here can better advise as like I said, I am more experienced with the more aggressive medium - relatively large cichlids.

Rams and phantom tetra's with an apisto and bristlenose was a good mix for me, as I said the festivum complicates things as I am not very experienced with them.

Hi james welcome along and welcome back to this highly additive hobby all the best with the new project
