I always wanted a goldfish...
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

... but as a kid, my mam would not let me get one.
Of course, I am now very thankful for that because the poor little fish would have been condemned to death in a bowl!
A friend has given me a 90 liter tank, along with a 50 liter tank which will be an emergency spare. I will be looking to get a filter in the January sales. (When other normal women are clothes shopping I'll be shopping for fish accessories.) The hope is to have the aquarium cycled and ready to house a fish by mid-Febuary or March.
Eventually I would like to have two or three fancy/veil tail goldfish. They will be relying on your advice to stay well and happy, because the sum total of my previous experience is with "Sea Monkeys." Not joking.
Which brings me to my first question. Where is best for me to shop West of the Shannon? Both for fish and for equipment they need. One place I have called to in my research spent 10 minutes after opening netting corpses from the tanks. There seemed to be 15 or more dead fish. Surely that is not normal?!? I'll appreciate any pointers you can give me.
I'm looking forward to many happy years fish-keeping with your help- Muirgheasa
Edit- awww... I'm a fry! How cute!

Hi and welcome along.
My advice would be get an external filter if possible. Many sites advise a filter suitable for double your tank size for goldfish due to them being kinda messy.
I'm kinda new to this also but that means the mistakes are fresh

struggled with ammonia levels for quite a while until I upgraded my filter.
Good bunch here I'm sure you'll get lots of helpful info
Regards

Hi and welcome alone
Cant help you out with were to shop as i live in dublin but i will tell you one thing stay AWAY from shops that have loads of belly up fish, yes ur right thats not normal and it is not abnormal to travel 30mins or more to collect a healthy fish, so i think the first thing to do is to find a good clean shop with staff that are more than happy to answer all your questions, and their is always good people on here to help too
best of luck with the new set up

Thanks people!
Pics are something that I hadn't thought of- and something I know I would be glad of down the line! Thanks for the idea.
I kinda knew that it could not be good to have so many fish belly up first thing in the morning, but I am a noob to this fish thing, and I wondered if it could be expected when you are dealing with large numbers of stock. Mind you, the premises in question wasn't the biggest place I've seen.
Filter wise, I have a strong table that I plan on using for the tank but it has no shelf, and space wise I think I have to go with something that will fit into the tank itself. It is actually a 98 liter tank going by the dimensions, but I've been thinking of it as 90 liter to allow for the filter and ornamentation taking up space.

JBL have neat internal filters Crystal Profi that fit in the corner pretty unassuming and JBL have a pretty good reputation.
Hope this is helpful
