Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all new to here.

Just like to say a quick hello I been looking through the site since last night.
I am very impressed and love the look of the site I got some great info from here all ready,
and hopefully I will get lots more. I will have plenty of questions and hopefully you will be able to point me in the right direction.
Here is my stock and tanks .

120 ltr tank cold water
all these fish are small and will be moved into a pond in the summer.

3 common Goldfish
1 white koi carp
1 Koi showa carp
1 shubunkin Goldfish
1 Canary Goldfish

110 ltr tank temp 24 deg c
I know some of these fish will grow very big
So I am going to get a bigger tank and change the stock in this tank.
My big mistake is 2 red tail black sharks one is very aggressive to all other tank mates
And I can't catch him to move him or sell him.

1 black Molly fish
1 silver Molly fish
1 gibbicep Pleco
1 Pterygoplichthys pardalis Pleco
1 Synodontis euptera catfish
2 angelfish
1 Bala shark
2 red tail black sharks
2 serpae tetra fish
4 zebra Danio
6 Penguin Tetra

28 ltr tank

3 neon tetra
2 Guppy fish + baby's
1 Plecostomus very small so will be moved to a new tank soon.
I am now thinking about selling this tank and getting a 60 or 80 ltr tank for my small fish.

I know I am over stocked and the more I learn the more changes I am making for the better.
This is all new only been keeping fish 4 months now and I am loving every minute of it.

welcome along mate, you got plenty of water to work with anyway haha. If you cant catch the rtbs what i suggest is a much bigger net, and im not being smart... i was trying to catch a gourami the other day and it was a nightmare with a small net.

Well done for being open minded about the upgrades on the tank sizes. New fish tanks are fun anyway.

Get some photos up!!! and enjoy the forum some top guys on here.... its great to have so much experience, knowledge and professionalism under the one roof.

enjoy

If you look at my other clips on YouTube you will see my changes.
When I started everything was in the 110 ltr tank.

Thanks for the warm welcome,
soon as I know where to post in each section I will get up photos.
And ask some questions I am going to change my 110 ltr tank and add some bigger fish
and all the small fish will be moved to a new tank.
When I did a water change last night and clean the filter I found a dead penguin tetra in the filter this is the first time I have seen this happen should I be worried ?

I wouldn't be worried that a single fish died. This is part of life. I would on the other hand be worried about how much ammonia said fish decomposing body sent back into the water ... I would do a water test and then a partial water change just so there is no major ammonia spike

In my last post I noticed this when I was doing a water change and cleaning the filter should I do another water change ?

No Irish, if you found him in the middle of a change it will be fine. Small fish can die off for many many reasons and if its a single occurrence don't be at all worried. Frequent water changes, a good clean, and appropriate feeding keeps the grim reaper for fish at bay....

I agree with gone fishy. I might add that it's always a benefit to know your parameters too.... one test can give you piece of mind

Totally agree Gilly. Get an API kit Irish as you'll quickly get a good baseline and frequent testing when doing water changes will alert you to a prob even before one might develop. You'll get used to the behavior of your fish and will be able to tell I there's a prob but he kit will give your actual parameters which are the first place to start when problems might arise.

Yes been on motorbikes since I was 16 and use mine everyday big into Subaru and fly fishing apart from fish keeping.

My
Ph 7.5
Ammonia 0 0.25
So I think the water is ok
I use Neptune tap watersafe at €5 for a bottle that treats 250 ltr
Should I use something else from the Internet or keep using this ?
