Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Solus,
Welcome to our little community.

First things first - don't hesitate to ask any questions, there is always someone who can help you (we all started somewhere).

Have a good look through the 'Beginners' section, this will certainly get you off on the 'right foot' and also check out the 'Articles' section, there is much there to assist you (even if it isn't all original).

So, read away and ask away.

A good idea of yours to add pics, there are some here who thrive on 'em.

One last thing, next to what you've told us you already have, the most important thing you will need (unless of course you do have one already) is a Water Testing Kit - it really is an essential piece of equipment.

For the Forum the quality of images is less important than the content, but yours are fine.
Check out the Tilapia name (almost certainly Buttikoferi) on goggle, you'll learn a bit more about them.
I once had a pair which were quite meek and mild - but when the had a family to protect - that was a different matter.
Last time I bought a test kit they were about €35, but they may be a little dearer now - but they really are an indispensable item.
Small tip, don't fall into the trap of buying the test strip type-kit, they really aren't the most dependable of things (voice of experience talking there).

welcome along.
now thats a fish with attitude  ... their a cracking fish but as said will outgrow your tank eventually.
1 tip often forgotten by beginners is to make sure your water for waterchanges is dechlorinated, a dechlorinater can be bought in fish/pet shops. once you keep the water quality suitable for the fish then all you need to do is feed him but don't overfeed or you may run into problems. thats where your testkit comes in handy for helping to pin point where it lies. when you do get it though it would be an idea to use it ehether needed or not to familiarise yourself with it. important tests are ammonia, nitrite and nitrate with a ph test being a handy addition...
that'll get ye a bit of a start so fire questions where ye need to and we'll help :)

ps. there was also a new section created on fish compatability that ye might find usefull

Thanks Jeff, funny thing is the Tilapia don't seem to mind the guppies, the little guys are around him a lot
and and he is not taking much notice, early days i suppose. i picked up a PH kit this evening and tested the
water i got a reading of 7 so i think that's OK. cheers again.

Welcome

try get your hands on a test kit. Testing the ph is important but the ammonia nitrite and nitrate are essential when starting out.

This is a great site with great minds and solid information.

Enjoy.

Welcome to the forum and to fishkeeping, you will learn a lot on here, keep asking questions and use the search function to find out information common topics from past threads. Regarding test kits the API one is my choice and pretty reliable, i think the pet shop on north main street in cork has them in stock at the moment, just make sure to get the freshwater one not the marine one, they are about €40 but last a long time.

As Dar says, the important tests to make are the Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate - pH can be important, but knowing the other details is far more so.
