Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all Im new to this site and finding my way around. Im fishkeeping nearly 3 years and really love it but am no where near the standard of you guys,. thanks for all the info and tips Im getting by reading the forum.now heres the scary bit. i took a photo of my tank a month ago showing my 4 favorite fish which Ive had from day one. A Green, gold and albino barb and beautiful red platy ( hope I have the names right).Ive lost one a week since I took the photo, the platy was floating last night.Last man standing is the gold barb. Water seems ok.Im scared now I'll lose the lot one by one. I'd like to be able to attach the photo but not sure how. Do ya think its their lifespan or there is something wrong.... a suicide pact maybe!!!

As for your fish deaths it would appear to be more to do with age

here is a list of approx ages that is in articles remember the that fish are probably a minimum of six months old when we purchase them some times more

i would suggest you post your test results if you could include your tap results as well but as i said previously more than lightly old age

Hi Louis and welcome along to the forum. Sorry to hear about the fish dying off.
I feel age isn't the problem here, while old age could of accounted for one of the fish,I think it would be highly unusual for 3 fish to go within 3 weeks of one another. I think you may have a water issue here. What are the parameters and also what size tank, feeding methods etc... Also how often are you doing water changes?
We need to know abit more about the fish and its tank before we can put a picture together of whats wrong. Did any of the fish display symptoms before they dyed?

Gavin

thanks for replies.I have a 90L tank.I use the organic aqua pack and replace 25% water once a month only recently got live plants.Amonia and nitrite at zero.Tank ph 7 and tap water 7.2 I did have a problem with PH goin to 6.4.but I think the live plants have helped in keeping water around 7. I feed the fish morning and evening. After the recent loss I have 5 neon,3 Black Skirt,1 silver tip,3 glow lite,3 hocky stick tetras,I think thats what they are called,3 rainbows,1 gold barb and my first cichlid, after joining this site, a firemouth. The water is crystal clear and this is really the worst casualities Ive had.I thought I was doing well until I browsed ur site and realised how ignorant and little I know. i make the excuse that Ive been flyin solo and learnin as I went along

hi Louis,
first can i ask how long you have been using organic aqua?

second do you use the health treatment?

i note you mention adding plants when was this?

did anything else change or unusual behaviour?

when were the newest fish added?

hi Micky & Catherine
I put the first plant in about 3 months ago and added a few more since. Im using the organic over a year and have been pleased with the results.I use the health treatment every week. the 3 rainbows were the last added before the first death. they were quite good eaters but stoped eating and sorta stayed at the top of the tank hiding

i would have a minor concern about the rainbows but i would be very surprised if they were ill at the time of purchase and not the first to die. in this case it may be some thing in the tank lay is upsetting them.

as for the three losses i thing i would mark that up to the end of a happy life due to natural causes.

but for further reference do you have an isolation/hospital tank. it is something worth while having and will pay for it self

and remember there is no such thing on this site as a silly question as we all learn from every question

Hi Louis,

Welcome to the forum :-)

Sorry to hear about your fish. 3 fish dying off might not all be due to old age ; however, 3 years might not be too bad either. Are the other fish behaving ok ? if there are no signs of distress/illness, then you might have to consider these disappearances as a perfect opportunity to go and shop for more fish.

I think I heard one day that with Organic Aqua, the pH tests as well as the ones for ammonia and nitrite were not accurate? Am I right to think this ?

If you have any queries, don't hesitate to come here and ask! :-)

i was just reading about your problems, i had something simular to yourself when i kept barbs and cigar sharks had to move them to a special tank but they got to big for that so had to put them in with my ciclids:laugh: ,thinking this was ok   but i had no choice for a while every thing was ok but all of a sudden my ciclids started to dissappear :( i had not got a clue until one day i came home to find the tin foil barb with one of my blue cobalts in his mouth (the whole 5\" of him ) ........ i love barbs but that was the final straw gave them to serratus in briittas :) :) :) in the end

no more deaths to report. Thanks for all the advise. I often doubt my water test results as they have been too consistant and Im not that good.what would be a good testing kit. Is there such a thing as too many plants in the tank?. Another thing I've learned from ye is I hav'nt been using air bubble machine

hi louis welcome to the forum sorry to hear about your deaths. unfortunately there can sometimes be mysterious deaths when all parameters seem fine and then the deaths stop and you never find out what happened. I hope it is finished for the moment for you.
