Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All

100% new here and 100% new to fish keepin!

Havent even got a tank yet, tryin to get a info on everything 1st, thinking of a rio rekord 96 or 120 and will get the whole thing cycled before I buy any fish.

1 question, I live nearish 2 shops that sell fish, one is near a \"boardwalk\" and the other is on camdon st, would they have a reasonable selection of fish? I'm not looking for anything really exotic although I see some fish that look like small sharks and if my tank was suitable for some of them that would be great?

Thanks
GR

Hi GerryR,

Welcome to the forum :-)

It's good that you are doing a little of researching before jumping in and if you have any questions, do, like now, ask ! :-)

It is recommended you get the biggest tank you can afford and can accomodate as it is easier to keep the water parameters stable.
The cycling process is well documented on this website and on the internet, but again, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
I am not based in Dublin, so I can't give any feedback on the shops you mention in your post. I have however visited most of our Dublin sponsors' shops, they are good and knowledgeable and would be of great assistance to you.
The fish you mention that look like sharks are probably Bala Sharks. They are absolutely fabulous and when I started fish-keeping, these are the ones I wanted too. However, they grow very fast and large and would outgrow such a tank ... :-(

I hope this helps.

Welcome again :-)

Valerie

Hi Valeriem

Thanks for the reply. I see everyone suggests getting the largest tank possible all right, I coul squeeze the 120 in but I think it woul be the only thing you'd see in the room (small flat you see) I'll compare the 96 and the 120 in a shop when I get a chance, hopefully the 120 will be ok :)

Thanks for the tip on the Bala Sharks, that looks like them all right, I'll go with out them for this thank so.

All the best

Welcome Gerry. Out of the shops you mention the boardwalk one would have a better selection. There is also Wackers on Parnell St. not to far from the other shops you mention that is going through a revamp at the moment. When it is complete you will have 3 shops locally.
If you can squeeze in the 120 go for it.

hi gerry, i'm relatively new too....

the only thing i can add is that
most newbs want striking fish that are usually
too big for their tank, which is an initial dissapointment

but...
theres a lot to be said for small fish that
have room to move and be active

i have a bunch of small silvertip tetras in my first tank
and its great scale-wise, they have room to move
they are great to watch

i was in a house with a record 70 recently
they have an angel, a plec, a clown loach and another
big fish (9cm) and it was depressing!

do plenty of research and dont rush your fish choice
tempting as it is!
