Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,
It struck me while ago that we are all rather friendly on this site and combine our experiences etc to make this site work.
However alot of people on here must have huge experience and its nice sometimes to find out a little bit about how or why they got started. I suppose its not a forum for boasting but more a thread to let people know how they got involved in this wonderful hobby.
So here's my little yarn, hopefully some of you will follow suit and continue the thread.

MY EARLIEST MEMORIES.
I first got involved in fishkeeping when I was 6 or 7 years old.(some twenty odd year or so ago!). It all started when I pestered my parents to get me a turtle,so they got 2 terrapins from a local carnival that was on in the area. My parents knew little about these guys,I being a 6 year old knew even less! So we kept them in cold water initially and they didnt seem happy! We didnt know anything about having to have a heater for them but being the inquisive 6 year old that i was, I discovered that they needed heat. I bought the terrapins everywhere with me,so one day I bought them out the back garden during a warm summer days and the tank heated pretty quickly, suddenly the terrapins were more active and eating which was a struggle before. So I put two and two together and reckoned it was to do with the warm water. Not bad for a 6 year old eh. Those terrapins went everywhere with me,I would visit my grandmother (rip) and the terrapins would stay the night with me too! Eventually they got too big and we moved them on and got into coldwater fish, had some success with Black moors and some Bristol Shubunkins. So finally after buying my own house I finally got e tropical fish I always wanted (my father preferred coldwater fish, and indeed has two remaining large fish which are over 10 years at this stage).

So thats my early memories of fishkeeping (even if its more turtle keeping at the time but tell that to a 6 year old who made the bath a second home for the turtle much to my parents anoyance!.
