Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just an 'hello' & an introduction....

Hi all,

I had a nudge in the right direction by a fellow ITFS member Limerickbandit to join you all here!

So here I am!

I’m new to tropical fish keeping….and I have a small Fluval Uno 500 (37.5L/9.8 US gal/8.2 UK gal) tank set up since 7th June this year…so its up and running six months and so fully cycled now.

It currently contains my 3 remaining Cardinal tetras (the rest died on me after a terrible incident which I won’t go into…let’s just say big lessons were learnt that day! ) and 2 dwarf Otocinclus.

I currently have a quarantine tank set up with 7 Rummy nose tetras and they’ve been in there a week. Looking forward to adding them to my main tank in a few weeks.:cheer:

I hope to have a much bigger tank some day, and in the mean time I’m learning a lot!

My next project is to maybe try out some ‘real’ live plants in my tank as I only have fakey’s in there at the moment.

Well, that’s about it for now….looking forward to talking to you all and learning loads.:)

P.s that’s one of my lovely Cardinal tetras in my avatar picture…his name is Lazerus, and he is named so because he literally came back from the dead after going belly up in the bag on the way home from the shop!!! He’s a hardy fella, that one!;)

Welcome along Lazerus,
Good to have you on board, sounds like you will have a cracking little aquarium going there when you add those rummys. They are great fish. I like Cardinal tetras also, tough little buggers arent they, alot tougher than neons I find! Ive 4 or 5 of them also since I originally set up the downstairs tank and they are always shoaling with the neons too!

Anyhow, great to hear you also have a quarantine tank, looks like you are doing things the right way! The lives plants are a great addition also in time, they are great for the fish too :)

So if youve any questions just shout and enjoy the trip! Your going to learn lots on this site and no doubt teach a few also! :)

Gavin

and will you stop saying you feel your not worthy to contribute,
a small tank is better then no tank,
you will slowly get a bigger one as you start to get into it more.

At the risk of sounding funny, size doesnt matter!!haha!
No seriously,if you can keep a tank,no matter what the size of the tank, then you are a fishkeeper and most welcome. Its about putting the fish into as natural an environment as possible and you are looking to do that. So welcome along and keep posting pics, questions, comments etc!!!
For the record my very first tank was when I was 6 or 7 years old (over more than twenty odd years ago)and it was about 2 litres and kept baby terrapins!!! The journey continues, albeit with fish rather than those terrapins!

Hi Lazerus :-)

Welcome to the hobby of fishkeeping and to the forum.

This hobby is addictive and it will be no time until you find yourself convincing your family members that you NEED that one more tank to accomodate your passion !

If you have any questions, don't hesitate ...

Valerie :-)

Hi Lazerus, cardinals are notorious bad travellers....just ask anyone who imports them... they go into a sort of shock, its quite normal for some to look dead when in a bag but as long as they are fit and healthy they do recover!!!
Oh n welcome to the forum!!!

hi Lazarus and welcome to the forum. Have you got any pics of your tank/s?

Let us know how you gwt on with the plants. I started to moved over to the real plants a few weeks ago. I tried floating plants but didnt like them. I have bogwood with plants attached, some moss balls and some java moss (which did not take). The rest are triving!!!

Hi again...

To be honest I don't know where to start...

I may leave it till after Christmas as I'll have to acclimatise my seven new Rummy Nose's into the main tank first.

But in the mean time I'll do a bit of research!!

Why am I so scared of real plants!

Well I am in the same boat. Its a bit scary but to do a bit of research into it pays off and they look much better!! I found out today that I need a CO2 system for the java moss so check out wheather or not you need one before you start!!!

Hmmm....Co2 system?..you see! I've fallen at the first hurdle already.

I only have a 10(us)Gal tank so maybe there's not enough room for plants? Espeically if it requires special equipment....

I know, I know, I won't write it off yet...I'll need to look into it and see whats suitable.

There's a place near me that does a great range of fresh aquatic plants...I might ask them.

It really depends what you want to do. If you want a super tank with super plants, you can have a CO2 system. But you can also have a nice tank with some plants without CO2. They might not be growing as fast or as well, but imo my tank looks great with low light plants and no other specific requirements. ;-)

Java moss will live in a tank with no lights, no heater and no filter , its hard to kill it
I have a small tank in front of me full with it :)
This was a few months ago

You don’t need c02 for this plant; just tie some to some bog wood.
This is some bog wood with moss from my last tank

Just noticed the same pieces of wood are in my sig
