Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Won't You Please Please help Me

Hi everyone, my name is Mark and I live in Enfield, Meath. From Dublin originally. New to fish keeping but caught the bug, sooo easy to catch the bug. Anyway I bought a 240 liter tank recently and also have a smaller 60 liter tank. I got some fish with the new tank and had some fish already. My girlfriend wants to keep the smaller tank as a peacefull community tank and I've got cichlids and a few others in the bigger tank. Its just I'm not 100% in what fish I should keep in the bigger tank. My local pet shop owner told me he'd take whatever I didn't want. I thought somebody might be able to help me in what best to keep. I have, a breeding pair of yellow labs and three of their remaining fry, 6 jewels which I think are all of the same stock, 2 bumblebee, 2 leopard cory's, 1 common pleco, 1 big featherfin catfish, 1 johanni, 2 blue I think labs, "not sure" I'll post a pic, and this big fellow " not sure" also post a pic.

Hi Mark, Welcome!! You have an interesting mix..... If you want to keep Malawi cichlids keep the Breeding Labs, the bumblebees, are they bumblebee cichlids? (crabro) if so they are fine, Johanni are ok, however very aggressive towards similar looking fish.... Jewel cichlids (Hemichromis-most likely bimaculatus commonest ) are from West Africa and do best at a PH of 6.5-7.5, but are very adaptable and tough!!!! I personally would take them out....
Other cichlids i would need pics to ID them....
The Featherfin will be fine, Leopard corys not, wrong water params. and will eventually omst likely get eaten!!!
Plec. will be fine.
Hope this helps!!!!

Looks like a calico peacock-Aulonocara sp. Looks female as males are more colourful and have eggspots on the analfin. Relatively peaceful compared to other Malawis- might get bullied buy more boisterus Mbuna- Most Pseudotrophus, Labeos, Cynos, etc but will live well with more peaceful Mbuna like Labs, Rustys, Hongi, Saulosi, etc.
Have you pics of the rest?

Hi Gerry, The local fish shop is called Budgies. I haven't bought any fish from him in ages because he hasn't got a great selection. I buy nearly everything from him for the rest of my pets though. Whats the one in Trim like?

Thanks Serratus, Yeah its a very peacefull fish it shys away from everything in the tank even from the smallest. My father said he'd take the Cory's. I was told this fish was a blue hongi but I'm not sure because he doesn't really look like any of the fish in the pictures I've looked at on different sites.

Welcome along Dalay, thanks for putting James Brown songs in my head for the morning ;)

Drew - re: that last fish - would you not guess its a cobalt zebra? I'd say they're a lot more common than ice blue greshaki

Pet store in Trim seems similar to the one in Enfield, it caters for most pets accept fish, they only stock a few gold fish so its not worth the trip across.

The nearest one i usually use is Petstore in Blanchardstown, or Equipet in Navan or Ashbourne but recently found another one in Ashbourne in the Supervalue centre, can't think of the name at the moment but had some really nice fish.

Thanks 2poc and Cardinal. I wont bother with a visit to Trim than Gerry. My favourite shop is the one in Santry woods. I'm still fairly wet behind the ears so the lad up their seems a world of knowledge and sound enough too. I got an email about an AGM coming up do many of you go. Is it worth the trip?

Alright Brian
Thanks for the info, was recently in the one up in Santry for a little nose about, it will be handy to have another fish shop locally. What is the best way to get to it, up to navan and swing around by the hospital? Is it in the estate just down the road from the hospital?

Cheers

Yip, up past the hopspital, some road works around there, and the new Navan business park
is visible on the roundabout.
Just one thing - prices are a little high here compared to some other fish shops, but when you
see the stock, you might forget about the price ;)

I'm only a novice Gerry so I can only offer a novice's advice. I vacumn the sand when I'm doing my water changes. I do it once a week because the waste builds up and looks brutal. I got the fish from different places. Most have come from petmania in Santry and some from Swords. I was also given some of the fish when I bought the tank.
