Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

just a beginner

Welcome to the forum blackti3
I have never kept a tank that size, I would think you should change 5ltr‘s of water once or twice a week and use a water conditioner. Dose the tank have a filter?

Welcome to the forum, and an addictive hobby, you started on the tougher end of things smaller tanks are harder to keep stable than bigger bodies of water but lb is right a 5ltr change once a week using water conditioners will help this, if you dont have a filter in it i'd recommend getting one it makes life a little easier for you and the fish. if you have any questions just ask we're all here to help each other and learn from each other as well.. once again welcome and remember "the ONLY stupid question is the one you dont ask"

Hi blacktie3 and welcome to the forum.
I dont want to sound nasty or mean but this size tank is not suitable for any goldfish. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and need plenty of water and filtration.
The "midgets" are probably white cloud mountain minnows. These are fine for this size tank.
With the tank only been set up 1 week you may lose some fish because the tank is not cycled. Cycling a tank normally takes about 4 weeks.
If you do not know what cycling is just ask and it will be explained.

I tend to agree on this, and while as you say you are a begginner its v hard to imagine that you are doing wrong when you perhaps arent fully informed of the hobby. Goldfish produce alot of waste, they eat alot, grow large and can live horrible lives in containers too small to house them.
Here is my twopence worth of advise. I would return at least 2 of the goldfish to the shop you bought,in fact returning all three may be an option and just running the tank with minnows would be v nice. The minnows should be alright, you will need a filter and will need to learn up on the cylce of a tank also. Too many people add goldfish to tap water in the hope of them surviving, many do but imagine trying to live in a smoked filled room, that is what the goldfish feels everytime he has to inhale chlorine in the tank water direct from the tap. You will need to do partial water changes weekly and treat the water you add to the tank,(also need to ensure the water being added is the same temp as the water in the tank).

I know its alot to take on, but the fish are all alive at present, they can continue to stay alive also but you need to decide what to do. If it was me Id get a bigger tank!!!!Hope Ive not come across too nasty! I think its great you are getting into the hobby, and minnows are cracking little fish. Goldfish are great too but man do they poop for Ireland!!

Gavin
