Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all, Jackojack here, new to tropical fish and loving it. Have 175ltr tank and all fish doing well...so far. The selection is 3 x Bala's, 2 x Angle fish, 2 x gouramie's (one keeps chaseing the other one and biting it tail) 1 beautiful Pl*co, 1 x siemese fighter, 5 x neon, 6 x zebra tetra's and 5 x guppies and 2 clown loach's. I did my first water change about 10% and so far so good. I have a feeling I might be overstocked so can anyone advise. Also another question when cleaning the gravel with the gravel vaccum thing do you just go lightly over the gravel or really give it a good clean.

I wouldnt say you are overly stocked at present but those bala sharks are going to get much bigger and then you will run into problems. The bala's will grow to 14 inches and grow damn fast. Id return them to the shop before you encounter this problem down the line.
The Siamese fighter may get picked abit from the guppys and tetras. The clown loaches can grow to 8 inches and up but they are slower to grow than the balas.

How long is the tank set up and have you done water testings? I presume the tank is cycled.
Yes 10% water changes weekly at minimum I would advise. I ususally get right into the gravel and you'd be surprised how dirty the water is and no I dont overfeed!!! Make sure you dont get a gobfull of the dirty poo water that you get from the gravel area!!
What time of filteration have you got and heating?

Welcome along to the forum by the way, get some pics up of the tank so we can enjoy it.

Gavin

Cheers, Gavin thanks for that. I bought an established tank a couple of week ago from a really keen keeper. with a couple of fish. Have added my own along the way. The heater is a Jager 3604 100w and the filter is Fluval 4+. I have done a complete water test and everything is reading ok alhough after the water change i though the nitrate was a bit higher then last time, but I may not have done it right. I'm just feeling my way at the moment with everything. The only thing I didn't do was clean the filer as I couldn't get the end off it. I will re-think the fish although I would hate to get rid of the bala's they are beautiful. I feel another tank comin on. One of the guppys is about to give birth by the look of it, would you leave it in the tank?. I keep expecting to see all the fish dead when I get up, but so far so good. Cheers and thanks again. Gwen
