Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

can anyone please help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 scoop out the gravel
2 rinse it in a sibh or drainer if its gravel
3 empty the fish tank
4 put half the water in
5 start up the filter
6 add gravel and turn up flow on filter
7 fill the tank up the rest of the way and wait a week or 2
8 clean out wool in the filter and do tests
9 wait another 2 weeks and do test again.if good ad 1 or 2 fish
10 You have a nice looking fish tank:)

As long as you don't put fish in there it's ok as the cloudiness is normal In a newly set up tank. The filter will help a bit to suck in debris but until you have beneficial bacteria your water won't clear as fast. Try to get some cycle inducer to speed it up else you won't need to add fish until you get your water tested.

didnt see you had already cleaned the gravel.
maybe you should replace the wool in the filter in a week or 2 or it might clog up

no need to empty the tank again:)

Don’t replace the wool in the filter
Just rinse it (in tank water) and its good to go again its only dust and in a new tank you need to build up good bacteria
Use your filter to clean the water, that’s what its there for and stir up the gravel when the water looks clean ;)

any Pic's :)

Al, dont worry about the water not being crystal clear,it never is when you first fill a tank. Give the filter a chance to do its work and it will clear alot of the dust from the water in the coming 2 days or so, in fact you should see a difference already today. The wool doesnt need to be replaced this early at all, as LB said just rinse it in some tank water (never ever rinse in tap water as it will kill your beneficial bacteria that your tank is tying to establish now). Id also add some quickcycle to the tank to get the ball moving abit quicker on that front and that should shorten the time waiting to add fish. You will need a test kit also. Finally get some pics up and let us know what kinda tank and fish you are going to have, oh and welcome along to the forum!

Gavin

shovelnose is a monster fish and will surely prey on small fishes like the tetras and smaller carnivores so better you considered other friendly fish. I had 2 of them before with a silver and red tail gold arowana they seldom swim around but occassionaly gulp oxygen on the water surface they grow fast with a big tank and frequent live food feeding

Some plecos do grow large. Even the one you have can grow quite big given enough time and room to grow.
The only puffer i would suggest for a fresh water community tank is the dwarf or pea puffer (Indian/Malabar puffer)Carinotetraodon travancoricus.
If you want plants in the tank you can add these while the tank is cycling. It can give you a chance to aquascape the tank while you decide on the fish.
I wouldn't add any chemicals to alter the ph. It is better to keep the ph stable. If you add chemicals the ph will be up and down all the time. The fish wont like this at all

Yeah never really stuck to keeping the ph down in my tank started to do it at the begining after talkin to people in the pet store but notice that some fish were not liking it at all, had 4 deaths over a 3week period so stopped and have had only 1 death since.

platy252 on the dwarf puffers i was researching them last night and i like the idea that they dont grow that big and that they will be around the same size as some of my other fish, was thinking of a male and female dwarf puffer any ideas on were i could get them?

The only thing that would put me of getting some would be the snails some sites were saying, to give them 1 snail every 2days and i just dont no were i would get so many for the puffers.
