Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi to all on the site.
I'm new to posting but have been reading articles on it for a while.
I have got some great tips, so Thanks.
I have 4 thanks of various sizes and species.

has any one any adsvise on lowering ph levels of my tap water.
Living in north Dublin and the ph level of my tap water is going through the roof over the last few months.
It has increased to about 9.
I was going to place some bog wood in the 40 litre barrel that I use for water changes for a few days.
Would this work.

Thanks

HI JOHN
And welcome to the forum.

lowering Ph. yes bog wood will help as will adding Co2. mixing in RO water.

plus look at your tank is there any thing you can remove that might be rising the Ph eg tufa rock or coral sand

have you tested water after it has being standing for 24 hours just to check the true reading?

Welcome to the forum John! Check out the recent thread entitled "Lowering KH and GH" in the freshwater water and health section. I posted a bit about preparing water in a seperate tank to lower PH and hardness.

Thanks,

I will check out the thread.

I have also checked the water a few days after I have treated it with safe guard but it's still the same.
I normally treat the water early in the week and do my water changes at the weekend.
I think my tanks are ok as I dont have any rocks in them I usually go for a gravel substrate with bogwood and a few plants.
Previously I soaked the bogwood for a few days before i put it into the tank.
I read somewhere that the tannins released from the wood may can be harmfull to your fish.
This may not be trun. (not sure)

Thanks Again Mikey & trimax.
Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

Unfortunately I don't think any amount of bogwood would reduce a pH of 9.0 to 7.0 or lower, even if you did have enough bogwood to make a dramatic difference, the water would be black brown! Tannins are good for fish, not harmful, but too much of them in the water will spoil the view.

Are you sure that your tap water is 9.0 after standing for 24hrs? It seems extremely high. Do you know you water hardness, GH and KH?
It might be worth checking your water with another kit or at LFS in case yours is out of date or inaccurate.
