Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello all,

Names Lee and Im new to fish keeping. Got myself a Fluval Edge about a month ago and did a fishless cycle.

Got the Fluval due to space issues in a small flat and the the G/F wanted a pretty tank to look at :(

had to take the hit. Went to Seahorse in Ballymount and picked out some Cardinals and Black Neons,2 guppies

and cherry schrimp.

i sense a mortgage on a gaff might be in the pipe line, i went from a 10 to 100 gallons while the girlfriend was in work and boy was she pissed, still is over a year later. i must say that the fluval as gorgeous as it is, it's very limited, it would be a great tank for a betta but i'd say due to their need for air you'd need to drop the water level then i could imagine condensation and mineral building up

Hiya lads are ya going to the show on sunday?

I had a disaster with my edge all was going well then i went to The Kiss concert 2 weeks ago got up with a skull crushing hang over to find my female guppy had nipped the tails of the tank mates!! it was a battle zone and i lost every thing but my cherry shrimp:(

so i am now thinking about stocking again to be fair i think i was over stocked in the first place but i didnt forsee the loss of all my fish...i think a big lesson has been learned.

Id like your advice if ya dont mind...i was thinking of putting in some zebra danio's and after a few months when im sure the tank is fine with no probs intrduce some rasbora. Id rather under stock but realise i cant pack the edge because ofthe size.

Cheers

Lee

Hello again Lee,
The Edge tank is a bit limiting as far as stocking goes but as long as you treat it with regard to that fact you should be fine.
Zebra Danios will be excellent for it - they are always 'on the move' and make a fine show.
Others you might consider (if you can find them are the 'Celestial Pearl Danios' (or whatever they're called this month - used to be called Galaxy Microrasboras) which are lovely little fish with very similar tendencies - activity-wise as the Zebras.
See how the newcomers settle and then, as you suggest, add some other fish as and when.
I'm glad to see you are intending to stock your Edge less densely this time.

John

ps, do come to the Show, you'll really enjoy it, I promise. Lots of the Forum regulars will be there to meet and have a chat to.

Welcom Lee.

NO Zebra danios ! It would be like putting a race Horse in your back yard, seriously, they are gorgeous fish and under rated due to their hardiness but in an Edge? no way, it's way too confining for them, I've had Edges and to me they are a great addition to anyone's collection of Tanks.

Given the volume and unusual design, they require careful consideration,

Firstly, No Fish that require gulps of Air, like, Corys, Bettas or any anabantoids, surface feeders, Hatchet fish etc, you get the Picture.

I have kept, Ember Tetras, different types of micro Rasboras, some Apistogrammas, African Shell dwellers, Chequer board Chiclids, espei Harlequins etc not to mention myriads of Shrimp, and nerite Snails too to deal with Algae.

If you do decide to drop the Water level, you can try smaller corys and smaller anabantoids but I would personally refrain. With ref to mineral build up, I personally, had no problem as it never gets dry, there was always condensation on the underside but the top is a dust Magnet.

The lighting can be ammended with cree led light bulbs and it makes a huge difference.

Planting is limited so do your research on low light level Plants.

Black Sand or white looks really good.

The usual comments re difficulty cleaning, catching Fish and aquascaping are rubbish, it isn't difficult, you just have to be persistant.

Given the volume of Water, you must be very observant of your water quality as this can fluctuate very quickly. You can use Poly filter in the Filter, it's the God of Filtration. The little Filter is very good, when you do water changes, remember to fill the chambers as they won't fill on their own no matter how much Water is in the Tank.

Kev.
