Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I made a big beginners mistake last week, I added two Malawi chilids to my 50 gallon tank. I already had to angel fish-two tiger barbs-2 rosy barbs - pleco - catfish - bala shark - two clown loach. They stressed every fish in the tank out and although I still have an investigation on going I suspect they killed my baby angel fish. I quickly removed them and gave them to purfect pets. But my two clown loach got ich. I have turned the temp up to 30 for the last 3 days and i have treated them with a solution I got in purfect pets once a day. I also stopped feeding the fish. I am now on day 3 but the white spot is still there but it kinda looks like it is breaking up on there fins. I now don’t know if i should stop the treatment or keep going. I only have one tank so i can move the loaches.
Any advice would be a big help as I am very new to this...

Hey,

I havnt had whitepot in a few years but it usually says how long you should medicate on the label.. id stick to that.
you should take the carbon out of your filter while medicating..

Try this- the natural way!
Turn up the heat a few degrees.. It speeds up the life cycle of the parisite. Also treat the tank with salt, it will help kill it.. add 1-2 tablespoons of slat for every 20 litres.

Only thing is im not sure if you should do the heat on salt treatment while using medication...? anyone?

Pat,
By now you're probably aware of the life-cycle of the 'ordinary' white spot infection.
Very simply it cannot be treated whilst it's on the Fish.
After that part of its cycle completes the little 'cysts' drop from the Fish, multiply and re-join the host - as well as many others!
So, you're waiting for that stage to arrive and after three days at 30 it should be happening pretty soon, I would say.
It's then that the treatment you have put into the tank will start to do its job.
Many treatments need multiple 'doses' is yours one of those?
Sadly Clown Loaches are among the group of Fish most prone to getting it and one of the harder Fish to cure. Since they have no body scales as we understand them they are more delicate. But persevere, it should go eventually.
As Alex says take out any carbon in your filter (if there is any) then follow the remedy's instructions to the letter, perhaps even lowering slightly the suggested amount for your tank size.

Good luck,

John

Thank you all for your help..

I will finish the treatment today as planned and lower the heat back to normal for the weekend. I will also do 1/4 tank change and if the white spots dont go I will repeat this in a few days.
Il will keep a close eye on my tank this weekend. Is that true? (white spot on clown loach is common but not ich???)

Any other sugestions welcome

Thank u
Pat

Pat,
I have heard this before about Clown Loaches appearing to have white spot, showing all the classic signs but not having it at all due to stress but have never personally witnessed it - perhaps I'm lucky enough to never have had stressed ones.

I think you're right to finish the course of treatment tomorrow and then keep an eye on things - reduce all opportunity of stress with hiding places as Cees suggests - but above all, watch the Fish...especially their actions. You can pick up so much information on how your Fish's health is by careful attention to their actions, anything 'out of the ordinary' can be a sign that all is not well.
