Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New to the site as a member but I have been reading the forum for about a month now.

I am a bit of a noobie to the hobby . I have an 84 ltr tank and already want a bigger one.

At the moment I have a trio of platies 6 cardinal tetra , 3 guppies and a german ram( who is stunning.

I only just got the ram and I have to say what a beatiful and interesting fish . I plan on getting him a litte harem .

I will be visting the site daily ( apart from Saturday and Sunday)
to build my knowledge . I hopefully make a few friends along the way.

Hope to talk to ya soon

Davey,
Welcome along to the Forum,
I hope you enjoy your time here with us.
I agree with about the Rams, little stunners indeed.
You might want to reconsider a 'harem' though - in such a comparatively small tank as yours is this could lead to bullying as Rams, especially females, can be awfully territorial and you just wouldn't have enough space for territories to develop.
I would suggest you bought one - or at most two - and see how that interactivity develops. Females are often more stunning than the males with their bright red 'waistcoats'.
Anyway, at the end of the day it's up to you, you'll find no end of advice, not to mention requests for pictures, here.

thanks John ,

Yeah thats why I am thinking at the moment just to get a breeding pair , but I am already looking at a bigger tank ( hooked)

But I will stick to a pair for now and see how they interact. As stated I have purchased a male and plan on getting a female in the next week or 2 want the male to settle in first .

At the moment I am feeding on flake but I saw that almond leave and alder cones are recomended for the species do you have any experience with these foods and are the readly available ?

Davey,
Neither of the two items you mentioned are for food, some people believe both to be capable of almost magic properties.
I use both myself but more to keep the water pH stable - as neither seems to lower it appreciably - others may have found different properties to both and hopefully will comment upon them.
I use them working on the theory that 'as long as they're doing no harm' - they're worth using...especially the Alder cones as they don't cost anything.
I do like the effect they have on the water, turning it an attractive (in my eyes anyway) tan-colour which would be far more natural for many South American species - Dwarf Cichlids especially.
If you need to buy them look on ebay, you should find them there.
