Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi All,

Great to see this forum available to fellow fish keepers. I purchased my 1st aquarium (3ft std tank) back in early '90s London and carried it on my shoulder through Irish ferry customs, gravel and all. Got stopped and left a bemused customs officer behind.

Its been 15 years since I've had that 3ft tank stocked so I'm a repeat rookie. I recently took the plunge and invested in a 350 litre Juwel Trigon. I intend to stock it with cichlids. Initially I was thinking of a mixed selection of Malawi cichlids, but my head has been recently turned by the likes of electric blue jack dempseys (S American and lower pH I'm aware).

I'm currently using the internal powered Juwel filter, and just about to set up a JBL e1500 external filter (with an eye on a Tetratec ex 1200 sometime in future).

I'm currently cycling the tank with 3 small cichlids (don't ask me species ID) for the past 3 weeks and the water readings have been as follows:
Day 9 - pH 7.6, Ammonia 2.0, Nitrite 0.17, nitrate 5
Day 23 (2nd Oct) - ph 8.6, Ammonia 0.35, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5
So on day 24 carried out 10% water change and lfs advised me to conduct 10% partial water changes twice per week to remove nitrates. Any advice?

Looking forward to learning and contributing what I can.

Slainte,

You're most welcome, enjoy your time with us (a hope - not a demand).
I see you've mastered the art of adding photos to your post, that's good, you'll be even more welcomed, I'm sure.

I think your water parameters are definitely heading in the 'right' direction - 10% twice, or even three times a weekis good advice from your LFS.

I really like the mental picture of you coming through Customs with a 3ft tank on your shoulder, that shows true dedication.

John
