Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'd advise against getting stones like this unless you are only using them decoratively as if used as a main substrate you will have problems with Food and Faeces getting trapped, you could call a Garden center and ask them if they stock pebbles of that size, a supplier that Garden centers use for Garden Stone/Sand/Pebble is a company called Glenview, they sell 25 Kilo bags, that's the smallest available and retail for about 7-10 euro.

I am totally against removal of natural Stone and Sand from Nature because it that's where it belongs.

Kev,
Would a few stones from a river cause that much of a hassle,if its cheaper and not a huge amount Id personally go with the stones out the river and have done so in the past, you also get to pick and choose the right size and shape when your there. Although of course boil and take precautions etc... If its only 1 or 2 centre peice stones then Id go with the river,as opposed to main substrate in which case Id agree with Kev on that one.

I remember the trend for Limestone Paving in the 80's, everyone wanted it for Rockeries and Paving, it was mental, it began to disappear from the Burren because everyone wanted a bit for their own garden, before you knew it, it was being removed so much that the law was called in, it was taken by so many people both here and in the UK that the police began arresting people, it always starts small and ends up getting out of hand, it isn't that expensive to buy legally quarried material.

To go off on a tangent, when fly tipping begins, it does so one bag at a time until there is tons of crap ruining beauty spots everywhere. One or two stones start to add up when it's no longer one or two people doing it.

unless your good on geology i'd personally stick to shop bought stone, i had an incident many years ago when i first started fishkeeping of not being able to keep fish alive for too long in my first tank, this was because of (which i didnt know then) the minerals in the rock being toxic to my fish, plus taking them from a river whilst the cheaper option you could introduce pathogens etc into the tank, not good, for the sake of a couple of euro best deal with your local lfs, or pond stones from a garden centre, sometimes the money you think your saving ends up costing you a lot more.

Fishkeeping the Only way to get wet and wild

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, I specified buying from a retailer as I very much doubt they send their staff out with bags to streams or Rivers etc in order to collect their stone, retailers buy from suppliers that have licences to extract the material from Quarries etc where the material has been laid down over millions of years as a result of Glacial activity etc. !!!!!!!!!
