Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Greetings...

Hi all not really a new fish keeper but determined this time to do things right, have had couple of attempts not throu neglect just lack of knowledge things didnt go well. Ive a juwel rio 180 used silca sand for substrate its brown looks good lots of rock and wood in it my tank is runnin a week now used Sera Bio nitrivec to kick things off done water check today ammonia and nitrate as close to zero as makes no difference but ph is high. Im told this is ok for the tank im runnin. Im hoping to set up a Dwarf cichlid tank. Any reccomendations would be helpful and if anybody has some fish to move on ive a small purse with some old money in it i well may open up. Look forward to draining information out of all a ya....

how high is the ph, most dwarf cichlids prefer a lower ph,
which type of dwarf cichlid are you thinking about,
we'll all try to help you out here

Ph about 8. Really not sure i just think smaller fish make the tank look busier. Personal choice would be small cichlids

I suppose that depends on what dwarf cichlid you are going to keep. Many of the SA species prefer very soft, low acidic water, but if you just like small fish to make your 180 look as busy as possible, you might consider Tangynikans? There are some of the smallest cichlids from there- the Shellies. Many species and wonderful character. Grand pH for them. You might be better off suiting fish to your water rather than altering your water, or putting Dwarfs into unsuitable conditions. Some fish will adapt, but many dwarf cichlids are very picky about water conditions.
Just my two cents.
Welcome on board anyway,
L

with a ph that high you are really looking at malawis or tanganyikans if your looking for dwarf cichlids maybe lamp. multifasciatus, lamp. similis, lamp. brevis, etc maybe some cypriochromis for mid/top water activity, take a look some lovely species out there and you wont have to go messing with your water chemistry

Welcome aboard,

the experts have spoken, its a lot easier to match fish to ph than to mess about trying to lower it. There are some lovely fish that will feel right at home in your water. Unless you have a definite yearning for a particular species, its not worth the hassle (imo).
