Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

There is an inter-club table show been held in Campion’s in Kinsealy on Sunday, September 4th.

This is open to all I.F.A.S. club members. I.T.F.S., L.F.K.S. and I.M.A.S.
If you want to show some fish and are not currently a club member all you have to do is join one of the clubs.

This will be an afternoon event.
Benching will be at 12:30PM

There will be a perpetual trophy/plaque for the best in show and certificates for class winners.

I will update this as it comes together.

Darren.

I think this event deserves everyone's full consideration, as Acara says, you have plenty of time to join any of the three IFAS Clubs - almost a month...DO IT NOW.

ITFS has reduced rates for the remainder of the year - doubtless the other two Clubs have also?

Let's hope this becomes the first of many such events between the Clubs.

I agree it's a great idea.

Not only dose it get the clubs together and have a bit of craic.
It also gives the junior judges a bit of training in the art of judging fish.

It's been a while since i've seen anyone elses fish so it will be interesting to see what club members are keeping these days.
Looking forward to seeing some good show quality fish. The sort of fish you know the owners are proud of.

Any ITFS members wanting to show some fish please let me know:
What type of fish (proper lain name if possible) they want to show.
A rough idea of size. So we can organise the right size tank.
Speaking of thank's i also need to know if you need a tank.

cheers, Darren.

I do hope this doesn't end up as another one of those things which everyone is interested in, but no-one goes to.

221 views so far, and only IGM has made a commitment to attend - will you be competing, Ian?

I hope to, but that depends upon the fish and our health. I had considered bringing along my 18 month old Nothobranchus rachovii as he had got bigger and more spectacular since the last table show....but in the last few days he is starting to slow down !!

For Darren....for info purposes for other potential entrants: is this a 'classed' show with places being made per class, or is it a non-classed table show where the placings go only to 'best in show' (and second etc)?
Do you know if there is a breeders class?

Don't they always?
That was a very large part of why I gave up on 'Annuals'.

A bit like older Apistos, the decline is really rapid once it begins - but I can forgive that trait with the latter since I'm so very fond of them anyway.

I kept Gloucester Canaries for about 5 years between the ages of 14-19. My brother kept the Border Fancy Canaries. Each year within that time frame there was an annual show where I came from originally-Wicklow.

There was an amazing turnout from all parts of the Island with some spectacular birds on show.

I still vividly remember the middle aged 'old hands' from England independtly judging certain breeds only (the one's they knew about). They where Gods in their field and they knew it as well!

Who actually judges the fish in the Irish fish shows-juniors from Ireland??

At the moment we have two senior (fully trained) Show Judges and some more 'probationaries' who are still 'under the wings' of those, but they've had the theory exams - just need more practical experience.

John

ps Dave, you kept pretty old canaries?

hi jay,
the bigger the fish the better obviously but size can only get 20 points out of a possible 100. a 3/4 grown fish would get 13 points. the last 1/4 is the most difficult to put on. there are 20 points each for colour, body, finnage & condition/deportment.
if you have a nice fish bring it along. best of luck.

Just a little reminder that there are now less than two weeks to go - anyone not a member will not be allowed entry for insurance purposes...so a timely prompt to remind you to join one of the Clubs if you intend either competing (well, your fish would be competing - but you get the idea) or even popping along for a look.

Ladies and Blokes.....

anyone entering fish?

It may well be worth contacting Platy well in advance in case you need to book a show tank.

Pkearney has given some important headers on show sizes.....I'm sure other queries are only a post away from an answer.

Only a week to go.

So if you plan on showing fish and haven't let me know already please do so ASAP.
I need to know what fish you are bringing and if you need a show tank or not.

If you are showing fish it is a good idea not to feed them for at least 24 hours beforehand.
This is so they are not polluting the water in the show tank.

Dont forget to bring enough water and a net if needed.

For those of you not familiar with the better side of the city. I attach a map showing the location of Campion's Pub on the Malahide Road.

I presume most of you will come via the M50. You need to keep right when you reach the end of the M50 and follow the signs for Malahide. You'll reach a roundabout and again take the exit for Malahide (essentially going straight through the roundabout). Follow the N32 past Bewley's hotel and take the second exit on the roundabout outside Bewley’s and continue to follow the N32.

About a mile further you'll meet a major junction with the Malahide Road. You'll see Clare Hall Shopping Centre over on your right (marked with the green pin on the map) and the world famous Darndale Hilton will be on your left. Take a left at this junction and follow the Malahide Road towards Malahide (if you've been to Kinsealy Pet Shop, you'll be familiar with the area).

Continue on the Malahide Road for about half a mile, passing a Eurospar and Bank of Ireland on your left. About 200 yards past the BOI, you'll see Campion's on your left (marked with the blue pin on the map). The entrance to the car park is immediately before the pub.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi, just a reminder that you should know the scientific name of any fish you're benching for tomorrow. If you're not sure, there are plenty of resources online.

Also, there will be no water available on site so you need to bring all water required to bench your fish. Tanks will be provided.

Regards,

Ken.

I have discus, rams and gouramis to help clean my Cory eggs up....nice job they do too. :) Magic, I never have sterbi fry hanging around my tanks.

I'll have a worm culture Andrew.
If there had been a breeders class, I would have bothered dipping into a tank of siamese fighter babies for you; but maybe pass a few your way at a meeting....if you like.

Semi-off topic.....but it bumps the post for late risers today.
