Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Im not impressed

Today i was in town at a pet shop on the quays near the italian quarter and i was looking at their fish. To my frustration i saw a fish which i cannot name but looks like a pike/cat fish of about 1 foot in length .... in what seems to have been a 120 litre 4 foot aquarium...i watched it for a while it seemed to be a very active fish but it struggled to turn around in such a small tank it was horrible to watch, within one sweep of its fin it was hitting off the other side of the tank.

If anyone out there can take a guess what fish this is and is looking for one and has a large aquarium there is a big guy out there in a very tight situation who would love to be adopted.

I know it sounds silly but i guess some things can affect you and id love to see that fish out of there.

Peace

i feel your frustration but unfortunately 90% of lfs do things like this. seems most shops don't expect to house them long enough to house them properly although the reality is far from that... i won't get into it because telling things like this seems to be a punishable act on forums so acceptance is easier unfortunately

Go out on a Limb and express your views to the manager and shop elsewhere.

Yea kev i have a good mind too. Im no stranger to over crowding tanks... i used to keep a clown loach in a 30 litre as its requirements were not explained to me. But what i saw the other day was outright neglect.i just know there might be some godly fish keeper on this forum and its exactly whats hes been looking for....and in turn i get this fish out of hell

Is this the Tiger Shovelnose catfish you're talking about Gilly.

(don't mention the shop or the location.....not good forum talk really when shops are locatable on the forum).

I believe by looking at it on google it was one of those fish ian. barely able to turn in a narrow tank. My bad ian still learning what the rules are etc...

Yep. I know the one you're on about in that case.
It's still only a wee small one at that.

I doubt you'd get anywhere complaining to this particular shop if it's the one I think it is. Go ahead and take a look at the conditions the rest of their livestock are kept in (the overcrowding is not confined to the fish). There have been lots of eyeless goldfish there too - I mean born without eyes rather than eyes missing.

There are big name sponsors on this forum who keep extremely sick animals, fish and otherwise, in absolutely deplorable conditions too. I'm not sure why one catfish is upsetting/surprising you so much. It can't possibly be the first time you've seen such a thing. This is the reality of pet shops in Ireland at least. Think puppy farms and you're on the right track. Best thing you can do is take your custom elsewhere because even if you complain to the DSPCA they can't and won't be interested in doing anything anyway.

ETA: @snaphappy - If it is the shop I think it is, that fish has been there for months.
