Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Not sure this should be in the news section but there is no Misc section that suits.

My PC died earlier, so I might be offline for a couple of days, if anyone is looking for me phone 087-6376543. I don't have access to email with this PC.

Mother board is blown according to Dell so I have to wait until Monday for a techie to call with a price, before I can arrange anything.

The motherboard is Intel 945 chipset 800-1060MHz - if that makes sense to anyone.

I phoned two non Dell suppliers and they said they could supply a motherboard that would work, but it would be sufficently different to require re-installation etc. So I think I will go with the Dell option, can anyone here tell me if I go with Dell motherboard can it be done without having to reistall everything and is data on the hard drives safe.

The hard drives are set up as RAID with one mirroring the other.

I do not want to lose data from hard drives as I have not backed up photos for about 12 months!

If it's just the motherboard I'd say the hard drive(s) are fine, I upgraded my computer with a new motherboard as I was stuck with on-board graphics with my old Dell motherboard. I had to upgrade alot more to suit the type of motherboard I got though. You'd be better off doing it with Dell as you can get one that'll work with what you currently have.

I agree that your data should be fine if it's just the motherboard. If you get a non-Dell motherboard, you're most likely into replacing the memory also to suit the new motherboard which will make it more expensive.

Regards,

Ken.

Excellent, thank you both. I promise to do back ups more often! How many times have I heard that. I wouldn't mind but I have a 500Gb external hard drive, but I dissconnected it at some stage for something and never bothered putting it back. Dell are coming Monday :-)

Many thanx Anto, I am fine with this, it's my brothers old one, it's my data and emails, etc etc I need now. Amazing how much you rely on a PC when you don't have it. Should be sorted Monday which is pretty fast though :-)
