Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

For those interested in Herpetology (reptiles, amphibians, spiders etc).

I am pleased to announce that The Herpetological Society of Ireland has declared that Membership shall be Free.
Existing members will have a full refund of their 2013 subscriptions (e-mails have been sent)

These changes, and others, are parts of new directions of The H.S.I. and to enable time to do more events plus more.

Full details will follow.

I will post details here. Readers can also take note of notification on the official website (www.thehsi.org) or locate the HSI Fan Page ( "The Herpetological of Ireland" ) on Facebook, or see The H.S.I. on Twitter.

As many may know, there is a more than just a close link between the HSI and fish keeping.

That's excellent news Ian, although personally not especially overly interested in these creatures (especially Spiders [he says cringing at the thought of even touching one]) as you so rightly say there is a positive link alright.
I'm (as I am sure others will be) looking forward to seeing further details of the HSI as and when you post them here.

There is great scope and an overlap of interests in linking with the fish-keeping world.

As one may have guessed, I'm a fish-keeper and Justine (who was also Chair of the HSI) is also a fishkeeper.
One of our new committee members is also a fish-keeper and she may be known by a number of people here. That makes up quite a few fish keepers on the HSI committee......so the link to fish-keeping is pretty easy.

ps. Justine has some superb tarantulas, yet she is an admitted arachnophobe.

As I said on Facebook Ian, I think free membership is very cool
I was going to become a member anyway, and was looking at the forms etc last week, so I fill led them out this morning!

As far as Spiders go, the ones I have living in the shed freak the living poop out of me, however tarantula etc wouldn't be nearly so much of an issue.... in fact I'd quite like to keep a few (not in the house cause the missus would kick me out very quickly)!

I'd be more into the lizzard end of things with chameleons etc being a big interest to me!

The hsi is a fairly wonderful group, and the more education people can get from these groups the better for reptile keepers as a whole

Fair play to everyone involved
