Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Supa Foods have been around for a long time, most supermarkets seem to stock some of the range.
I have used their terrapin foods and found them good.
Have a look at the ingredient list, and check on ash content etc. compaired to the big brand names.

The reflective foil is for heat not light, but many Fishkeepers use Tin Foil as a reflector, so don't see why it won't work too.
You won't get the same reflection as with off the shelf reflector. I would be a little worried about heat build-up under the hood.

At 400w/hr that's a lot of power being used to pump water, and I would think that this pump is not for continuous use, I may be wrong on this.
Also the same store do pond pumps at about the same price.
Keep an eye out in garden centres, it's soon pond sale time!

I use the Supa food for the fish in the pond and have no issues with it, also mix a handful in with the flake food for my 350L just to mix it up a bit, some of the fish seem to like attacking the floating sticks, if you see what I mean
As for the pump, this is what I use in my water butt to pump water to my 350L, just be careful as it is a powerful pump but has no problem pumping the water 25ish meters from the water butt to the tank

Those Lidl pumps are great for transporting water (ie only in small bursts of use) - I looked at them myself but at 400watts they would soon swell your electricity bill if you tried to use one all of the time (24/7 as our American cousins might say).

As to the pond food, I have used 'Supa' pellets myself, and if not quite as good as the Tetras of this world my fish ate them and never complained once.

Indeed, I'm off to Aldi this afternoon to get a bag.

Could you put a tap on the end of a hose coming from the water butt with the pump running ?
I use the flake food from there so I get a few packets of the pond food. It should last 8 fish untill Xmas

I don't have a tap on the hose but I do use a 50mm diameter hose and this will lessen the flow somewhat
I did buy another food they had once, not sure if it was Aldi or Lidl, Multifit Nutrimix I think it was called, came in a green plastic container. It had a mixture of sticks and flakes but none of my fish in pond or tank would eat the white flakes, every day all the sticks and other flakes would be eaten but the white flakes would be left!!!!!!!

Lads have you anything to add to my pond project I feel its coming near to the end and tomorrow I hope to finish some ground work fencing and the crazy paving. I am also looking at adding a sturgeon shark maybe next year and maybe a few 2 ft koi is this a good or bad idea. I am also thinking of a small water fall for tomorrow it will be worked from a over flow pipe on my skipper filter.

Cant wait to see the pond finished, hope it all goes well seems you might have a busy Saturday.Just my opinion but I think you would need a much bigger pond to keep 2ft Koi, as for the shark, cant say, would you be able to leave it out over the winter

Sturgeon you won't see much, and the smaller species (diamond) grow (slowly) to about 90cm.
Koi will, as theangryman said, grow to at least 60cm + , so be prepared to pass them on later.
Again make sure the ground work is finished, before adding fish, fresh cement, etc falling into the water,
won't do your fish or water, any good.

Please do not put a Pleco in your pond.
There is no need, and would be way too cold for them.

The reason i asked is there was one in with koi fish in a indoor pond in the pet shop in Athlone.
i am after coming across a very strange heater here in work and it was heading for the skip untill i seen it.
it is very big and used for floating in water and keeping it at a certain tempature does anyone use these in a pond ? i get a photo of it on monday once i get the paperwork to take it home. I also got a rKc REX-C10 digital control unit for water tempature does anyone know how to setr the low setting and what would be the ideal setting for a african cichlid tank i was thinking 30deg c for high setting alarm and 22deg c for a cold setting alarm. Its been a busy day i am also getting pipe adptors made for a external filter and a inline heater.
