Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fish Tank Kings/Tanked

Are any of ye guys watching these shows on discovery?

Fish tank kings I find to be a better program as when they build a tank they usually do their best to give the fish a good enviroment to live in.

Where as in Tanked they are liable to put anything in to their setups. Last night i was watching an episode of tanked and they built a massive acrylic tank that would sit in a dentist's waiting room. It was 7500L ..... yes 7500L, they put a 3ft black tip shark and a 3 ft nurse shark in there ,along with some other fish. But then they had the bright idea to stick a giant toothbrush with air bubbles coming out of it and a mock shark head complete with braces. In the same episode they had to make a tank for an appliance shop , so they gutted a fridge and made a tank to fit inside, this was tropical fresh water tank for cichlids. So instead of giving them a proper home to live in they had yet another bright idea and filled the tank with mock milk cartons and cheese and everyday stuff you would find in your fridge.

I think this takes away massively from what are some beautiful tanks.

Stuart.

I've never really watched FTK but I hate Tanked. They're like the 3 Stooges, I'm always waiting for one of them to say "Wiseguy, eh?" and poke the other in the eyes! And the tanks on both shows are too garish and commercial for my tastes. The also lean very heavily towards marine

I think the thing that bugs me most about both is the aqurium as furniture or interior design piece attitude, I think I have only seen one episode where the client seemed to have some interest in the fish or appeared to be a fish keeper.

I think the people who use these 'services' are posers with more money than sense and are just trying to outdo the last 'project'. For the 'professionals', it's all about ego, the fish are only secondary. You never see these people going back to maintain these tanks as we have to do in the real world. :(

I think I wrote some pretty damming words on these at some time in the past.

I gave "Tanked" a complete miss initially......but I do tend to watch it now as part of the usual dribble I get on TV (eg Storage Hunters, Wife Swap, Lizard Lick Towing) and do find parts amusing.

Fish Tank Kings simply buries something somewhere......too many idiots with too much money who "need this now"; a total tw&t called "Fish Geek" really gets up my nose (usually by him flaring his nostrils whilst he speaks)......and when I see a curator of a big public aquarium call in that bunch of clowns for consultancy help then I wonder how the curator got that job.

But.....why not?

If you look at it as nothing more than light harted banter and mindless entertainment then its ok......
if you look at it seriously then yes it would get on your tits......

also i HATE that they walk into a fish shop and there are literally THOUSANDS of tanks with EVERYTHING in it fully stocked.......
WHERE THE F*(* does that happen? NO WHERE.....

We all walk into a shop and normally end up having to order what we want specifically....
Yes shops stock what they can, and ill never hold capacity against them.... its a fact of life, ya want something unusual then ya just have to order it...

Ha ha some strong feeling here towards these tv shows.

Yeah they do tend to lean heavily towards marine, although you do see a few fresh water tanks in one or two episodes. In fish tank kings they make all the reef structures themselves some of which look pretty cool. Most of the people getting these tanks do not want to do maintenance and use these tanks as a " look at the size of my tank " probably for the benefit of their friends who will then run out next week and buy a bigger one lol. In fish tank kings they make most of their money maintaining tanks for customers so that just goes to show that these customers have no real interest in the fish.

In tanked their company is ATM ,(Acrylic tank manufacturing) This is what got me interested in this show as i thought it would give us more of an insight into how they make the acrylic tanks, but alas no.

As with all American "reality tv" you have to Dumb yourself down to sit through it. But i think its worth it just to see some of the fish and some of the setups that they create.

Stuart.

I really don't like them more because what they say about the channels that broadcast them. I used to love the documentary channels but in the last few years the standards have dropped abysmally. The History channel has basically become the Nazis and UFO channel... and both at the same time if they can get away with it. NatGeo broadcast a completely fiction 90 minute special recently... on mermaids.

MERMAIDS!!!

They had actors presented as eminent anthropologists, zoologists etc. They even depicted how mermaids could have evolved from shore dwelling Homo habilis type creatures. When the schedules are overrun with either fly-on-the-wall shows like Gold Rush and Storage Wars or borderline delusion shows like Ancient Aliens, that mermaid documentary or Finding Bigfoot, you have to wonder has someone done a Robert Johnson and sold his soul at a crossroads somewhere.

I'm thinking of pitching them a show of my own.... LemonJelly, Unicorn Hunter!

It's a wonder the channels haven't found that fish keeping was founded by the Knights Templar......but there could be a sign.

In the light of what I've just read I think it's a blessing that my TV doesn't receive any signals (although I would have liked to have watched the Roy Harper programme the other night).

It's all a conspiracy !!

I've just noticed one other major, and behold....this is relevant to fish keeping, conspiracy:

there was a time when we were led to belive that there were thousands of species of freshwater fish......

..not so !

There are in fact only less than 10 freshwater fish in the whole world...here is proof, and listen and watch carefully:

from Mongolia to Thailand to Australia to wild Africa to South America and North America (I missed Europe), 3 production teams with 3 fish hunters (Jeremy Wade, Zeb Hogan, and that very hairy blonde Czech bloke) can only ever find the same fish as each other.

Amazing.....that is surely proof that no other freshwater fish species exist apart from that few shown on sat TV.

Amazingly, Jeremy Wade seems to be almost always entirely ignorant about any fish he's hunting that episode. He's there trying to figure out what mystery fish has been dragging little children into the water for decades while I'm screaming "It's a f¥£king bull shark!" at the TV!

Though I am aware he's doing it all from dramatic effect ;)

There I go again... teasing myself now
