Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Yeh Deeco the massive clown loach was his, it used to belong to another member of staff, Dave, who is sometimes on this form. He also owned the Heros sp. "rotkiel" which won its class, the wild severum beside it and the sorbrum lima-pencil shovelnose catfish, think that was it???!!!!

Hello again from Yardley, Pennsylvania.
Congratulations on your first successful fish show. Will the site be posting photos of the winning fish? And their owners? My club, the North Jersey Aquarium Society(njas.net) is having our weekend extravaganza on the last weekend in October.
I'm a moderator on another site, NYCichlids.com and I invite anyone of this site to check it out and join if you would like.

Quick question. Typically, after a fish show in the states, there is an auction of live fish and dry goods. It usually occurs the day after the show. Smaller auctions will also take place after monthly meetings. Do the auctions happen in your clubs or in other clubs in the UK or on the continent? I've heard there are strict rules in some European countries covering the handling and selling of fish at shows.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Thanks for your support. The show certainly was a success, for our first attempt. Many fish shows have happened Ireland over the years but this is the first of the current crop of fresh blood. An auction did take place, even though it was very unorganised and we didnt know if there would be any interest it still went ahead thanks to Dennis,KenS,Anto and a few others.Unfortunately it was on at a time when hundreds had come and gone and only 10 or 20 people hung around for the auction. They all left extremely pleased and not light of pocket, they got some amazing bargains.Follow this link to see some of the show winners and miscellaneous pictures.

Thanks for the quick reply.
It looks as though you had lots of children at the show. That's terrific!
I have found less and less kids interested in the hobby over the past several years. At the last two meetings of different fish clubs here in Pennsylvania, I was the youngest there and I'm 50. I guess the kids would rather be on myspace or playing video games.
For auction attendance I have found the best thing to do is advertize, advertise and advertise. I assisted with the advertising of the NYCichlids auction last April. I made sure our information got in TFH magazine, in pet shops using fliers, other clubs' web sites and emailings. The auction split was 60% of the sale to the seller and 40% to the club. The monies help with the upkeep of the site.

Hi AlishanAS.
It was a fantastic. Fishkeeping is still in its infancy in this country.
I don`t mean we have just discovered fish and are dancing around a fire in our Lion cloths. This was the first show for many years in Ireland. Most don`t recognise unusual species and realise how hard it is to come by these fish. They were amazed by the diversity of fresh water fish you can now buy and successfully keep in a fresh water setup.
Although in saying that there are some quality fishkeepers here.

We now have 3 clubs instead of 1. This forum is growing and growing.
Our fidh shops are now rivaling the UK in the quality and variety of fish we can now get our handson.
It going to explode............

Hope you like is here and continue to hang around..

Anthony - I have noticed the amazing growth of this forum over the past few years. When I first started following the site you were lucky to get one post per day. The upgrade appears to have helped tremendously.
As for your comment on the fish stores, I looked over the species list that two of them posted on this site. Excellent selections of fish, especially cichlids and catfish.
It does appear fish keeping in Ireland is taking off. As I mentioned before it is not good time for the hobby around here. At least in my area of the Northeast US. Many of the Mom and Pop stores are closing shop. They are being forced out by the superstores(Petsmart, Petco) and by internet sales(Thatpetplace.com, Drs. Foster and Smith, Big Al's, Aquabid, etc). That is not to say there are not quality shops still in existence around here but they are few and far between and getting very expensive for both livestock and dry goods. I'm lucky enough to have a relationship with a store in New Jersey. He lets me pay his wholesale price for fish and supplies and I give him my grown out juvenile fish.

Goldy - my club has a fish show every year. Usually it has been a one day affair followed by an auction on the next day. This year it is what we refer to as an "extravaganza". It's an entire weekend of presentations, a fish show, a banquet and an auction. Check out www.NJAS.net to see what is happening. Another weekend extravaganza is occuring two weeks later and is being coordinated by a consortium of 4 clubs - www.afishconvention.org.

nice list of fish there. your weekend extravaganza looks like it will be great. I like the idea of the Saturday night. This is on a much greater scale then we are used to and with many more members involved. Good luck and I hope it is a really great weekend. Maybe who knows in years to come when we have progressed to a weekend soiree you can come and join our extravaganza as guests. well you gotta dream.

aah you all say that.. only the best stock comes from this fair isle. but it would be nice to meet some time in the future. fish keeping here is really only starting to take off again and sometimes it feels like we are in a bubble being an island. choice is much better then it was before though. when you read and look up the sites about fishkeeping in the US the mind boggles and the wish list gets longer. its just a whole different ball game for you.
