Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A couple of things (I have PM'd Darragh before):
- Site does not remember logon
- Show latest posts not in chronological order (or does not show from the last logon)

Apart from that ... no major problems that I can see yet :)
Thanks for the hard work.

Kindest regards,
Valerie

Presistant logins across multiple sessions should be fixed now, it is to do with strange server setup we have.

I'm still working on the other issues

All articles have to moderator before they approved for publishing on the website.

User profile and location information I'm still looking into

Could you tell me please if you have worked out yet how to get the 'quote' boxes into replies?
I tried using the well-proven method and, although that section of the message did appear, it only appeared as part of the reply - not in its own 'quote' box.
Am I making any sense here? - I know what I'm trying to say but don't think it's coming across correctly.

I agree with the forum showing posts as unread when I've already read them. Also see to be getting a lot of mails when topics are replied to. Appears to be sending these by default - can we have this as opt in rather than opt out?

Otherwise it looks great. Thanks Darragh for all your work.

Ken.

@ Darragh,

Another couple of feedbacks ...

- Logon
The field \"Remember Me\" now remembers that I want it ticked but my logon is not persistant from one visit to the site to another, I have to log on every time.

- Profile setting
_UE_FB_ORDERING_TITLE - When selecting _UE_FB_ORDERING_LATEST, the system opens the End page, showing the 1st messages of the thread ; I was under the impression that it should open the 1st page, showing the latest messages of the thread.

Thanks.:)

I have another quick query. Is there anyway that the user can change the number of posts show on the page. At present it seems to be set as six posts per page. With the last forum software it was possible to select the number of post to be shown i.e. 5,10,15,20,25 etc.... I find it tedious to have to keep reloading the page after only reading six posts!

This may be in place because of users using 56k modems but I just wanted to ask if it could be changed in person preferences.

By the way, top job with the new look forum! I really like the new ITFS badge at the top of the page. B)

Lead me not into temptation, For I can find it myself!

New item (I think).

To see latest posts you click on 'view latest posts'

To see posts since last visit you click on 'since last vist'
This brings you to a list of topics that have had posts since your last visit.

On the far right (also included at the start of the title in some forums) can you add the little grey square that brings you to the last post within the thread?
Its a very handy feature that only seems to display in the main forum index.

Thanks!

New items

1. cannot delete pms
2. forum is very slow even on broadband

Comment re. already mentioned issues:
on the old site you could see if new posts in any particular section. With the new forum in place I have problems with this. It also shows post that I posted as new entries which the old didn't. Does that make sense?

Hi Holger,

We just noticed that the database is missing it's proper configuration which can make the site run slow at times.
To rectify this, the site may be down for a few minutes tonight between 20:00 and 20:15 to restart the database with the proper configuration.

Sorry about that

Hi,

We think the current database configuration is causing a few issues with \"new posts\" etc, hopefully when we restart the database at 8pm, these issues should be fixed.

Darragh,
Just a suggestion ...about email notifications.

The email notifications of some threads having been contributed to is a very handy feature if you are avidly following a particular subject.
From what I gathered, when you post on the forum, just above the 'submit' button, there is a checkbox, ticked by default, that subscribes you systematically to the thread.

In order to unsubscribe, you go into the thread, and click the unsubscribe button on the top of the thread.
This leads you then to the list of topics you have been subscribed to and gives you there the option to unsubscribe from other topics.

This checkbox on the message posting should be definitely be available but its default should probably be unticked. It also would reduce the amount of trafic on the website.

This is a suggestion.
Kindest regards,
Valerie

Now in order for users to subscribe to a thread, they will have to click on subscribe on the thread

Holger,
I have changed some of the settings on your PMs, please try deleting your PMs now and PM me if there is an issues with it

Hi Darragh

Just 2 or 3 notes from myself.

Is there no saved items for PM's anymore? Does that mean that there is just unlimited storage capacity of keeping read messages in your inbox or will they still eventually work there way to the bottom & vanish?

I'm still having problems with the 'Show Latest Posts'. They don't seem to be in any time & date order like the old ones were. I usually start @ the bottom & work my way up.

The site still seems to be quite slow.

Picture sizes. These seem to be very small now. Can these be made bigger? It'll be a impossible to carry on with that ID Quiz thread at the current size.

Regards

For the picture size issue, you'll notice in the \"img\" tags that there will be a value called \"size=150\" or something to that effect. Simply delete the size=150 attribute and the image will display in its actual size. So basically make sure you have something like \"\"

Hi Darragh,
serious problem. Parts of my post keep getting cut off for some reason. It already caused enough problems and confusion in the Derek Doyle thread and I just discovered the poblem again when I just tried to post. Have a look here:
www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/index.php?o...2&id=19018#19018
three paragraphs have just not been posted
Strange
