Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Garden centre yet again was created by apistodiscus (apistodiscus)
Called into Hanley's Garden Centre in Cork today. Usually not a bad place. Fish are generally healthy. Selection isn't great and a bit pricey but they do get some fish in you rarely see around. I have bought some nice L numbers there since they opened. 7€ a pop for L89s because the guy who was serving me thought they were run of the mill plecs.

Anyoldhow, today I thought the attack of the clones had started. Dyed albino corys, dyed parrots, long finned plecos. Disgusted. Last time they got my business.

Holger

PS. took a few pictures with my mobile, so I'm able to proof my statement

Guess thats about the only advantage in places that aren't serious LFS's,and use staff that don't know their fish, you can get some real bargains through mis-identified specimens.Only problem with that is,you would have to be careful and quarantine well.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

Holger why don't you explain to the manager, at least try.
he probably hasn't a clue what he's selling or the general moral wrong being committed.
If he shrugs his shoulders, like quite a few do, then at least you tried.

I have been in there myself on a few occasions and i thought they had nice fish. I did go in there last week and saw all the fish that Holger mentioned.Green parrots aren't very nice looking anyway.
There are a couple of guys there who know a bit about fish, but i too wont be buying from there again. its about time dyed fish were banned.

Have been in touch with Keith at Hanley's and he states,

It is what the customer want's i.e supply and demand.

I suggest a few more e /mails from members might make him change his mind, don't sit on the fence, contact him and make him see sense.

Second e mail recieved from Keith.

He appreciated the fact that whilst not illegal they were supplied on the understanding that the coulour would fade. and took commemts on board.
One point he raised was that it would be a good idea if outlets were supplied with a guideline as to selling tropical fish ect by reputable associations!!!
Not a bad idea , how about a charter that we could circulate to all known outlets that they could sign up to. and if they agreed we wouldn promote or recomend them.
Just a thought!!!!

Sterling work lads, now its up to the ITFS to put together a guideline document on what are acceptable breeding/selling practices.
Just as much as some store will try to sell these abominations, its up to us not to cross breed fish, and certainly not to allow said crossbreeds to be passed around.

Why are they selling fish if the haven`t got a clue how to keep
them or never heard of dyed fish.
What a fewking a*****e.
I do like your idea Russell on setting up a charter. Maybe if
we were to start up a news letter and snd it out to the shops by e-mail it might help too.

Hi Anthony,
A news letter sounds about right, informal & informative. Perhaps we could toss a few ideas about and see what comes out of it. I think all need to do is explain our aims & beliefs. also the benefits of being associated with the ITFS. e.g promoting the outlets that agree with our charter and recomending them as a knowledgable trader. who has a reputation to uphold.

a charter sounds about the best idea. Just waiting to board a flight to the US. Will have a dig around when I get back to Ireland. The German Cichlid Society put a charter together some years ago and I thought it was quite concise.
