Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Dave,

I would welcome any educational content and I will not tolerate destructive criticism of any articles on the website.
I think there will always be critiques of content posted and I would think any author would welcome constructive critiques.
If anybody does post an article and they fell they are being criticised in a destructive manner, they can email in confidently at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and I will personally come down hard on that person.

It has always been my purpose that the website should focus on education and maybe I haven't been very clear on that point up to now.

Regards
Darragh

Fom now I will only browse the forums and withdraw from any participation.
I get confused as to who runs the site, and especialy when Mods start crisising and belittleing other Mods.
Perhaps if there was a mod for each section that specialised in that topic it would help solve the problems. but we have mods taking over 50% of the site forums.
So I wish you the best for the future and will watch with keen interest
regards
Russ,

You do not really mean it, besides Holgar had a VW we slagged it off last year in a good hearted way, lets not bring up any old jokes, besides no one has called any one tank a washing machine in nearly a year, so relatively speaking no one has taking the piss, so please dont leave.

I can see Holgar is getting tired of answering beginners cycling question, I bored of it to, but Daragh has a point in any forum there is a high churn rate, even the good forums so new blood is vital, IMO assuming a beginner post in a beginner's section (the forum should direct him that way) then say Micky anwsers all questions, as he is less likely to recommend a proud breader of guppies not to use them a feeders guppies

There fore example Anthony and Derek, take care of Africans, and say Holgar take care of south American, and Russel say Discus, Lampeye Marines, my self fish diseases.

Every one is Moderator I was not even asked to be one, but got stuck with one, as for articles they are a good idea, but a LFS is leaving them self wide open to major attack , if they are going to do that may I suggest if the subject is keeping say south American then say its emailed to Holgar for approval, before going on line and in the case of Marines, Lamp eye and my self, any corrections would be do off line, this could avoid any criticisms or any on necessary pops be taken.

I think we can only agree to dis agree, we are even arguing about the money for the PFK ad even though I offered to pay for it in full, why not close the forum and set up www.theirisharguingforum.com instead and be done with it.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

as we get side tracked yet again... I give up. The forum has turned into a talkshop that is getting nowhere. How hard can it be for a bunch of adults to come to a conclusion what is essentially a simple matter?
By the looks of it impossible

This has gone too far.I have a few opinions I am going to express now because I am sick of hearing the same old tripe:

This is aimed at the experienced fishkeepers on this forum:

What is the point of browsing the forum every day and not getting involved? Why should the rest of us keep it ticking over just so you can join in at a choice moment. This is selfish in my opinion and decreases your validity in my eyes.
In my opinion you shouldn't be allowed do this. You have tons of experience and knowledge and you choose to be selective and frugal with it.Why should the small few contributors struggle everyday.

Please dont use any excuses here,if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.I think to use excuses for not posting is weak. The majority of people get along fine but there is always going to be debate or disagreement,it is how we react to this that will make the forum a success. The more people helping the easier and better it will be.

Totally agree Chris. There are a core of about 10 people keeping this site alive and giving answers and advice to newcomers. There's no excuse for those experienced fishkeepers (some who rank among the most experienced in the country) who choose not to post because somebody disagreed or criticised them at some stage. Not everyone will agree with you - live with it.

Regards,

Ken.

i have just read through all the posts on this thread and now would like to add my thoughts to the debate. first i think almost all posters make valid points and i would agree in principle with virtually every point made. but we will not change anything by trying to police the trade, we can do better by advising or persuading the few shop people who actually stock these unfortunate animals.this is what i have always done but in recent years i have not actually seen any of these dyed fish in any irish shops i frequent.

overall i found this topic interesting and informative and even entertaining but the strange part was that every poster agreed that the selling of the offending fish was wrong and still managed to in certain cases fall out. so i would be worried about a future topic where posters had opposing views.

finally although aggressive debate can be healthy, namecalling and personal slurs must be avoided at all costs as the written word unlike the spoken word can not be easily retracted and can be re-read again and again.
