Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

“Write an Article for the Forum”

To get the New Year off to a good start and get some content up on the forum, we have arranged a competition. All you need to do to enter is to write an article for the forum, it can be on any fish related topic. There are some suggestions below, but it can be anything that takes your fancy provided it is fish related and is your own work.

Derek Doyle and Phil Kearney has agreed to read all the articles and select the winners. All submitted articles may be used on the forum. There is no minimum length or particular format required, if you don’t like typing you can contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and arrange to submit a paper copy and we will arrange the typing.

• Articles for beginners setting up a tank
• Keeping a particular family/species of fish
• Breeding a particular family/species offish
• Plants and Aquascaping
• Marine tank set-up
• Marine tank husbandry
• DIY Projects, Ponds, Tanks, Cabinets etc.

First prize €100 voucher, second prize €50 voucher. Vouchers are for one of the sponsor shops.
The vouchers have been purchased and lodged with Derek Doyle for safe keeping.

If possible supply added content like photos, references etc. to make the article more interesting, but they are not a requirement.

And the small print:
• All articles must be submitted to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by midnight January 31st 2008
• Winners will be announced early February and the judges decision is final.
• For both prizes to be awarded there must be at least three entries.

Deeco, you have the whole month of January, unless you are planning one hell of a night tonight, that should give you enough time

I have as you notice started a few new post, this is not to show off, if I wanted to do loads of new posts I could of done that months ago, its been deliberately to tip the balance of fish related to non fish related posts during this critical time for the forum, dont expect answers quick as I am already in trouble with my Wife for spending over 3 hours knocking up 10 new posts, I will be back after a few days when she has calmed down.

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

Hi guys, Im new to the forum but been keeping fish now for about a year and wouldnt mind trying to write an article about my experiences (both positive and negative) in getting up and running - or maybe one about some DIY projects I have completed.

Would that be ok even though Im not a regular member.... yet ;)

I can not see why you can't.I for one will read it.
Don't worry about \"I'm not a regular member yet\",a member is a member,no matter how long or how many posts. We wouldnt want an elitist attitude to develop.

Anyone can enter the competition I'm sure, i'm looking forward to the articles.

Just one thing (for clarification), being a member of the forum is different from being a member of one of the societies. For example, being a member of the forum won't get you a discount in any shops. Just for clarification ;) ;)

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

I was just wondering, since this appears to have faded from regular discussion, if this competition is still running? I was toying with the idea making of an entry myself but at the speed I type it could well be next January before I get it done !!!

The competition is still running, we have had one entry so far, so I am hoping there will be a few more. Typing speed is no excuse, we can type it up for you if you like, no effort spared on this end :-)

Just to make sure that the email link is working, would anyone submitting an article just PM to say they have send one. I don't expect to be drowned in reponses, but hopefully the entire forum could manage half a dozen at least ???

I guess 23:59 and 59 seconds :-)

Personally I would not be too strict, but I guess to be fair, I did say the end of January and I better stick to that. Please don't let that put you off though.

Anyone else out there still to submit an article?

I have been promised at least one more.... (hint hint hint) :-)
