Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Blue Jack Dempseys are both notoriously expensive and comparatively rare.

While the price you quote seems at first glance a little on the 'ouch' side I can tell you I was fairly recently offered some in England for £35 each!

So the price you were offered them for is not that unreasonable...in those circumstances.

Similar sized ordinary JDs out this way are €13, if you fancy a drive 'Out West'...

well first of all im not happy about the edit, how are people to find out where is good value for one,so this site is not willing to tell where is good and where is bad, ireland is too much of a rip off in every aspect, since joining this site i have found links to bying in the uk,and surprise they are a lot cheaper, why do we have to put up with this, pet shops are making huge profit on selling fish, they get them in from less than 1e to cichlids from 2 to 3 euro,am i they only one concerned about being ripped off,

Hi convict84,

We understand that there are variations in prices from shop to shop and as for anything else you want to purchase and as you are doing yourself, people should shop around to compare and decide before buying. However, the forum cannot be used to point fingers at specific shops, hence the edit.

Regards,
Valerie

Firstly you will find out through shopping about where is good value or not, Secondly you have to consider that Dublin prices are going to be dearer to the rest of the country as their rates are a lot higher so they still have to make a profit to survive, Thirdly as Johnh has said the harder a fish is to get the higher the price unfortunately the old rule of supply and demand is at work on this one,

As for where to buy, well i travel from Limerick to Galway regularly to get my fish from Aquapaws, never have i felt ripped off, their prices are always excellent and the service is second to none, hell i find it pays me to go to them with some of the savings i've made on both price and quality of fish, plus they will go out of their way to order anything you want, most of our sponsors will do the same but you have to consider especially as your talking about Dublin, its the rates and rents that hike up the prices not you lfs

Strangely enough, I saw a blue JD last night for sale for the first time.
It was about 2 inches & cost 32 Euro.

I won't say where it was as I might buy it myself today

I too thought that price was crazy.
What a stunning fish though.

If I don't buy it I'll let you know where it is.

the blue jd and its origin is shrouded in mystery. popular belief (most likely) is that it is a variant or mutation found as runts in a normal jd brood. When they first appeared on the market their price was prohibitive as they were real dazzlers and dificult to propagate. to produce blue jds they have to be bred back to the normal strain in a complicated process. they are smaller and less aggressive.

there is great variability in quality and colour in specimens offered for sale which would explain price differences to some extent. So as in most things you get what you pay for.

The really good ones are a sort of electric blue and are dazzling.
I considered getting some a while back but after some debate decided that i preferred the better body shape of the normal strain.

I bought one on Friday. Small but stunning..
Going to grow him on with my African cichlid fry & then set up a CA tank once he's big enough not to be eaten.

Will PM you the details now
