Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Simply Phyto Product Launch

Hi guys
Some of you guys might know me from Fish Antics in Dun Laoghaire, As with all of us we try our very best to keep our little fish and coral friends happy whether it be sitting up half the night when the power goes out or the first time one of your little darlings has its first brood of eggs, We are always learning, developing and trying to understand our aquariums. This includes the guys that sell you your sock and your aquariums.

With the hobby progressing at an alarming but educational rate, it leaves us hobbyists in a bit of a pickle with regard to accessing and attaining good quality sustainable stock. So I have for many years been studying and experimenting with certain marine species such as Florida Ricordia, Rose Bubble tip anemones, Common Clowns, Bangi Cardinals and Cleaner Shrimp. Some have been successful and other not so. But with this trial and error it has opened a world of knowledge and dedication to the hobby.

With this you can image my electricity bills!!! And the water changes that are needed on our 1500 litre system’s on a monthly basis. We had to think outside the box, after some research we carried out on Florida Ricordea, into why they were amazing when they were added to my display tank then they turned a lovely brown colour within a month. I started to probe into the world of their nutritional profile and came up with some very interesting results.

After mastering enrichment for the common clown’s and shrimps. We focused on the different stimulants to help fulfil the true dietary requirements of the coral species and came up with a mix of nano cultures and the best crustacean to encapsulate these cultures. After trying many of these for several months and sampling to certain friends Simply Phyto was born.
What you should expect from our Product. It’s 100% Live Phytoplankton. Rock solid consistency in relation to densities. Retail back up to where and what corals respond best to the product. A huge increase on growth and vitality. Increase in Copepods which will help to stabilise systems and create balanced food source for more difficult species of Fish. (Copperbands, Mandarin Fish.) It will not affect your water quality like its “Dead” organic rich competitors as it’s a live mix.

You can purchase an introduction to Simply Phyto at FishAntics 73 York Rd, Dunlaoghaire. Co Dublin at a discounted price of €4. (While stocks last)

Should you have any or need more detail about the above don’t hesitate to contact me.

James Martin.

Hey Reef Paddy

The current bottle is 250ml dosed daily of 15ml per 100lts. You would need 45ml per day thats 5 bottles per month which = €20. If you buy our Phyto card of 10 bottles you will get 25% off = €30 and you can collect or get them posted direct to you (with extra postage charge).

Hope this helps

James,

Congrats on the research!

I understand that many of our reef inhabitants feed on phytoplankton, mainly soft corals, sponges, gorgonians, clams, feather-duster worms and other filter feeders. Other small animals in the water reef tank such a copepods etc can also utilize phytoplankton as a food source, thus boosting the "Live Food" content on our reefs.

Stony corals, on the other hand show a strong preferance for zooplankton to meet their energy needs, with light of couse as their supplementary requirement.

From what I understand from your website, Simply Phyto is not simply phyto but also contains the rotifer, Brachionus Plicatilis, thus providing for both our soft and stony inhabitants?

Just to clarify. what is the strain of phytoplankton in Simply Phyto and what are the cell sizes? Isochrysis? Nannochloropsis. Finally what is the recommended shelf life of your product?

I have been looking at a products like this from the UK, such as DT's phytoplankton but shipping costs were prohibitive and the issue with dead culture and resulting reef tank adverse reactions were big on my mind.

Keep up the good work

Seany

Seany

Thank you for your post,

As the site has only gone live some of the text need tweaking, I hope you find the answers below helpful to your questions.

“From what I understand from your website, Simply Phyto is not simply phyto but also contains the rotifer, Brachionus Plicatilis, thus providing for both our soft and stony inhabitants?”

The branding name of my product came from alot of work looking into the perfect densities to support a decent shelf life. (too many rotifers = Crash of nano culture’s) so technically the product is zooplankton as it has been inoculated with rotifers but the percentage of rotifers do’s not warrant this name as the percentage of rotifers to nano cell count. (9000000 to 2). With this I will change the text on the web site to Phytoplankton with added rotifers. With that low numbers of rotifers I do not recommend this product for Sps corals.

There is a zooplankton product in the pipeline but it was thought best that we start at the bottom of the complex marine food chain. This product will be available mid July (best to walk then run!!) and with a better explanation then simply phyto with more complex information regarding densities.

“Just to clarify. What is the strain of phytoplankton in Simply Phyto and what are the cell sizes? Isochrysis? Nannochloropsis. Finally what is the recommended shelf life of your product?”

The strain of Phytoplankton used is nannochloris 1.5 to 2.5 micron due to its high content in fatty amino acids and high protein content. (Best for colour and growth rates and overall nutritional profile) All our cultures are sourced for a well renowed American supplier, are shipped dry to prevent contamination. Just spotted another typo “is a number of algae's measuring 1.5 2.5μ”

The combined product has a shelf life of 1 month as long as it’s kept refrigerated at 4.C. All marked by a Best before Date. This has been tested for the past year in the culture of the clowns. Only we would be keeping the rotifer counts much much higher.

Finally I have tried nearly all other products on the market all from the UK. (As anyone who is going into retail). Some have been shocking others have been ok but when I asked the questions of where they using “Nano Pastes”, S.g questions, and so on. Some I am still waiting for a reply 2 years later !! I will say no more.

I thank you again for the feedback. Can’t improve without it.

James.
