Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I would suggest you wait as in the previous two years a week or two after Aldi offered theirs Lidl has for sale a larger tank for little more money.
Last time I bought one for around €75 it was an 84 litre Vitakraft tank, hood with light unit, heater and internal filter (identical to Eheim units) and was very good value - I'm waiting for them to re-appear, which if the previous scenario arises, should be in the next few weeks.

I've just looked on Lidl site and here they are (as if by magic!!!):

Good value, pity it's so close to Christmas though (and that the price has increaed a bit).

great minds think alike :P

Guess I can wait a few extra days for some new tanks. Looks like a better bet than the ALDI unit.

Thanks for posting that.

If previous experience is anything to go by they sell out very quickly (and out here in the wilderness some Lidl offers don't even appear at all!!!).

Last time they had plenty in Birr, but on the previous occasion they didn't even have a single one!!!

So what I'm trying to say is get there early. You watch, there will probably - now I've said that - be hundreds and the need to be first in the queue totally unnecessary!!! But worth bearing in mind all the same.

Eheim / MP make these as far as I know but they are marketed under a different name when sold onwards by the likes of Lidl. There are good tank, couldnt fault them to be honest. Also a 3 yr guarantee which is good.

I got one of the 84l last year. Brought it back to Dublin from New Ross on the train.
There is LOTS of wood and plants in it.
Currently it has glowlight and ember tetra's, otto's that spawn when the moon is right(april and november; + water change, +increased aeration...etc), cory's who eat the eggs then, lyretails that spawn every 10 days (3 f, 2 m) and a couple of farlowella's, who seem to be 2 girls(and one is pregnant!!. Any sponsors got a boy???????).

It has performed perfectly, but I added a Fluval U2+ to suppliment the filtration, which really helped overall.

If only the lyretails would stop playing bunny rabbits for a while, life would be good!
(They are useless mothers when delaing with fry (i.e. they remember to look for them 3 days after they have hatched), but will defend the eggs (and half the tank near them) fiercely while they incubate.)
