Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Scam ALERT!

I have got a few strange phone messages at home over the last few days, finally decided to phone back this evening, I guessed it was some kind of scam because the phone number left included the international dialling code for Ireland although it was local number.

Anyway, I phoned, straight through to India where "Mick O'Brien" was waiting to take my call, telling me I had problems with Windows Vista (I don't have Vista!) and he could fix them by running a few programs on my PC. I had great fun with them pretending to be following their instructions but the results on screen were not what they expected (they wouldn't be would they, I never touched the keyboard). This went on until he got annoyed with me so I told him my PC was not connected to the internet "would that matter?" he nearly had a seizure and started treating my like a two year old, he he.

For extra amusement I phoned back and asked for Dick O'Toole, who amazingly also seemed to be available to take my call, I said, "Hi I have my credit card here can I give you the number?" He nearly wet himself with excitement until he realised I had given him 24 digits (should be 16) so after treble checking the numbers with me, he eventually copped on and hung up. Sorry I spoiled his evening :-)

Anyway just a warning, DON'T call or if you do, do not follow instructions, there is a bit about it here:

social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-U...9d-9e45-6ab45f611693

The phone number I got was Dublin 9014647 ext 11563, but any extention will work as will any name. LoL!

Thanks so much Daragh, good for you,

I did something like that while in Canada, My gf was getting all kinds of annoying sales calls so I did something that I had read before, I asked the Guy, it was 19.30 in the evening, if I could have his home number as I was really busy and I'd call him later when I had time, he said, I can't do that, I said, because you don't me ringing you at home? he said , yes, I said, now you know how I feel D*c*head, he went berserk and hung up!.

Thanks for that Daragh.

More or less the message I got, but as my mother is not terribly technically minded, she told me my computer had a spy :)

You've just reminded me - I have to send my Bank details to this lad in Nigeria - he's going to deposit $100,000 into it and give me half for letting him get this money out of the country.
He must be pretty desperate to remove it to trust me!

I'd better do that, he's probably waiting for the details now.

Pan-handling for the stupid and vunerable. Scum. It has some success this is why they do it, some unfortunate sods actually fall forthis stuff.

Fair play for takin the mick, I'd say he had dollar signes on his eyeballs all rolling like a fruit machine and made a wet patch on his seat when you mentioned credit card:)

Ah you gotta love these lads. I love it when they send me e-mails.

I pretend I'm in love with them and send them song lyrics.

One of them told me to "Rot in poverty a**hole" which I'll always cherish.

As we move further along the line of "electronification", yeah I made up a word:) this sort of fraud is going to be more common:angry:
In Nigeria the gov were involved in buying thousands of old PCs from banks and gleaming everythng from the old disks until idiot banks IT departments had the cop on to destroy disks, the banks themselves are responsible for a lot of the fraud that happens through internal security lapses, lol that guy in france, how much?.

i've just got off the phone to these idiots after playing them for over an hour, firstly i told them i was going to turn on my pc and i'd put them on hold and went and made a cuppa, 15mins later i get back them and when they start asking me to go to the start menu I told them my ps3 doesn't have one :) "oh sorry i thought you said ps not pc, i'll go and turn it on now but it will take a while as its running very slow, i'll have to put you on hold again", i can nearly feel him starting to smile thinking he's got another sucker, so after 20mins on hold this time, you got to admire their determination, i hit them with the Arnold soundboard below, if only i could have recorded it, it was priceless, he eventually hung up when i kept asking to speak to his mother :)

Lads gotta say it, a lot of companies outsource their IT to India and the personal information of employees and customers is stolen from their systems, very easy to do when you work in IT and there is a a massive emerging market for this information in India amongst other countries, unlike Nigeria's gangs that bought used bank and corporate computers and dug up information from the hard drives.

It is no coincidence that India has a growing cyber crime problem, which just seems to coincidentally be a couple of years after the mass migration of IT services to India over mainly the last 8 years. Companies like BT with whom I have worked with have had account information handled by unvetted tech support agents, including but not limited to email account passwords!!! Same here in Dublin, anyone could access the email of a BTYahoo customer just by accessing their account on the support systems.

With more and more companies following this trend, none of the information you give any company, ISP Energy supplier and possibly banks is safe. I have worked for 2 financial companies, one had very restrictive security, the other completely void of good security practices, and this was a reinsurance company, add to this, they have just moved their IT to India where this information is sold wholesale.
