Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I was thinking it would be great to donate an aquarium with fish for one of the wards.
The funds could be raised to buy a decent secondhand large tanks and stand .
And maybe the odd fish here and there donated by members.
The thing would be though that it would have to be cleaned I for one would volunteer ,
But would other members be willing to give up some of there time to help clean and maintain the tank , talk to the children about the fish in it if they are interested ?
Of course food and medicines would be an ongoing cost but not and expensive one and maybe some of the sponcers could get involved there or donations from members.
This is of course would be if the hospital agreed to it
What are peoples thoughts on this
I am just thinking out loud really and have not looked into the ins and outs of it
comments please pros and cons please

It was put in by water-world and AFAIK is still maintained by Gerry Evens.

I've been in and out of that place so many times over the last couple of years with my kids. I've noticed that so many of the children stop to look at the aquarium on the ground floor - many manking the trip down from a ward especially to see it.
It'll be interesting to see what further tanks are going in - I think there's one in a waiting room somewhere as well. It would be nice if some of the less mobile kids could have an aquarium nearer by.
I'd agree with Kev though - the maintenance of these needs to be regular and professional - so many of them just look like c**p because they get neglected after a while.

I sent the hospital a mail just to see if the have any interest in the idea and this is what they sent back
"Many thanks for your email. This is a wonderful idea. I have forwarded this on to the hospital for them to view. The hospital has several policies and procedures with regards to the purchase of materials etc. but this is something they may wish to pursue. I have emailed Suzanne Kelly, CEO's office with regard to your suggestion and I will get back to you as soon as I receive a reply.
Huge thanks again for your very generous idea - it sounds great."

Check out the underground Seahorse World we have just custom built for Temple St Childrens Hospital in association with Dermot Gavin
We have managed to complete this project free of charge with the help of all our suppliers.
So big thank you to everyone involved.
The fish world is located in an underground 18th century coal bunker / tunnel which runs under the path and roads at the front of temple street children's hospital. We have contructed a main tank at the end of the bunker which is marine and contains all the "Nemo" characters among others. The tunnell has 2 x 2.4metre benches which we have made as aquariums in 19ml glass. These tanks are fitted with lots of air bubble ornaments which the kids can turn on and off via interactive mushroom light switches. The bunker is available to all kids in the hospital but in particular long term patients in the multi sensory ward and the brief was as interactive and as colourful as possible for therapeutic reasons. The bunker has been painted with lots of fishy characters and was officially opened yesterday by Judge Peter Kelly.
A big thanks to all the Seahorse Crew who spent most of the night in the bunker the last night and over a week to have it ready for the big day - so if you notice us walking with a stoop this week you will know why.
The T.V program detailing the project goes out on 17th December.
