Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Saw this on a thread on another forum and one of the comments said something like "if you take the asking price and half it, and still think its too much then dont take it too seriously". Pretty much says it all I think. Sweet tank but from the looks of it its in a garage. Whats the point? I guess if you wish to keep monsters like Pacus and such then its probably the only practical place to have it but, after forking out that kind of money...

This tank was made by a public aquarium in France and brought over here by the owner.
He had it in his back garden in a marque because it wouldn't fit in to the house.
It is now in a car showroom.

I think at this stage they should realise they wont get the asking price.

It used to be filled with large Cichlids, rays and plecs. Until one day the original owner back washed the pipework killing most of the fish.
It was a pity since he had some of the fish for 15 years.
I did have photos of the original tank but i cant find them.

The original owner has moved country and intended to build a bigger tank.

Just a bit of history for ye.

Jaesus, thats something.

Tank has gotta be worth about €3000 or more, it is massive, something you'd see at a public aquarium. You have some good options of what fish you can keep with 11 foot.

I'd say €800 is more realistic. There's a very limited market for that tank and the cost of moving it would be more than the initial €800 outlay.

Ken.

Believe it or not the stand for the tank was designed for moving.
The guy used to travel with his job and bring the tank with him. County to country.

The last time it got moved it was resealed.

Seriously?? Thats some feat of splashing out (excuse the pun). It looks cool full of Cichlids but I reckon this guy is gonna have to get a little more realistic with his asking price given the times we find ourselves in. I mean, for a quater of that money you could create an incredible reef system, in the thousand litre range with all equipment and still have change for birds and beer. Make for better use of the cash imo ;) .

8K is nuts alright.

Though with a reef you cna spend a grand on new leds alone, let alone the 1000l tank rock corals fish ect.

Wonder what seahorse will quote for a tank of the same size and glass thickness ect, that would give you an idea of what it is worth.

I know originally it used a small swimming pool filter. Sand was the media. The filter tank had a diameter of about 20-30".
A large UV and a lot of pipework.
I forget the dimensions of the tank, but it was either 4 or 5 feet high and deep.

The present owner may have changed the filter system, but i doubt it.
Either way i dont think it is a realistic price.

8 grand yeah far too much, but offering €1200 is the opposite end of the crazy scale too. I'd say the maint is a hell of a thing to be doin after a days work

If I owned my own home I'd love to have a tank like this but I'd fill it with thousands of neons or rummy noses. Good luck to the buyer when water starts getting charged for!... He or she will need to start collecting the rain water.
