Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about people posting about shops online when they have been in the shop and not said anything to the staff. i you aint gonna speak up in the shop then dont talk trash online. sometimes there are reasons for stuff in shops happening so make sure you ask first, and if the reasons are rubbish then post away

Damian many people dont have the courage to speak up at the time,or may feel like they are not sure if they are right initially. People can comment on things in shops if they wish as long as it is valid. In many instances there are no excuses, and shops cannot defend themselves from some critisms. In an ideal world it would be great if everyone had a voice, was able to say it to the shop at the time and all that, but alot of people wont do that. It doesnt give the right not to post it online if its a valid reason to be cheesed off over something. I dont mean something small such as mis stocking or selling a blood parrott or something which often have vaild reason, but for more serious matters perhaps where sick fish are knowingly being sold to the customer or information being provided is wrong etc...

I agree we have to be careful about commenting about shops on the forum, and we have a no name no shame policy, however raising peoples awareness of problems in shops is a way of ensuring others dont get caught out either. As with everything,we need to be careful in this matter also as we know shops can have valid reasons for things not always running smoothly, and give the shop the benefit of the doubt in certain instances, but you know there will be matters that no valid excuse can be provided for. Good shops will ensure customers know why certain things are the way they are (eg. was in a shop last week and there was tanks with whitespot but the tank had a big no for sale sign, mind you I still got whitespot in my tank from the 2 fish I bought in another tank!).

Finally,I dont think too many people are posting about shops online are they?? Where has this bee in the bonnett stemmed from Damian?

Gavin

on another token- which establishment/profession is free from ctiticism??
i believe in freedom of expression; and if it was a rly silly complain; without basis; the poster here will also tend to lose credibility.

Well put Andrew. We are quick enough to praise shops also so it can work the other way of course also.

I just dont get why people come on and moan about aspects of a shop but dont say it in the shop.
I have seen 2 examples in the last few weeks and the first example I ended contacting the shop in question even though if memory serves me correctly there were 5 pages on the thread moaning and ranting with the shops name being pmed around and not 1 person had contacted the shop.

Two other points
1.You are also presuming that everyone here knows enough about fishkeeping to be in a position to make remarks.

2. Names are not kept secret. Generally they are either pmed around or the location is give which makes it obvious.

Of course people are entitled to share their experiences BUT the shops should ALWAYS be given a chance to explain themselves before there name in blemished on any forum.
