Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Well I only jumped onto another forum for a few minutes and came back to a totally mutated thread.

Trying to picture Cowen dressed as a flower being chased by a randy martian down Merrion St...not having much luck but that could be down to lack of imagination on my part. Scary stuff...

Hawking is right to think it would not be such a good idea for us to get "visited". Who in their right advanced mind would see humanity as anything other than destructive and uncooperative.

I watch Discovery channel in hope of hearing sense of the world (I now know how to stoop foward and grin whilst training my guinea pigs!).....then suddenly an expert pops up and says "in our latest space probe, we are attempting to communicate with potential ETs using mathematics as that is the universal language of the universe". AND that would be said by an expert scientist.
Ummm....how did they manage to communicate with the ETs to tell them that mathematics was the universal language to use?

Man doesn't half assume some rubbish (even though I am of the believe that mathematics could be the universal language)

And if there were problems predicting the economic downfall (which, afterall, is no more than a man-made thing anyway) or man-flower hybrid in power here then how on earth do we expect man to predict things that we haven't a clue about?

The main problem Ian, imo is that we are determined to fight nature instead of living WITH it.
Trouble starts in the Crib, Kids are pandered to, catered for and worshipped, the ugliest Child is the prettiest and told so, why do you think the people in the USA are so Narcissistic, they are told they are the best and the prettiest, any superlative you can imagine and then they go out into the big bad World and get the shock of their lives when they realise Peter Pan is a childrens Story and not true. The ones in control won't be told, won't pay heed and subsequently suffer, at least, those behind them do.

All of this can be sorted when the Baby arrives home, kids, like any other animal need direction, example and correction. I remember a day fishing in Dunloighre, a Guy was repairing a Boat and I had my Nephew with me, out of the blue a hail of stones rained down on both of us, It was a Kid and his Gang, I caught him and grabbed his Shoulder and asked him why he did it, no reply, a slight shrug... I thought it was over but when passing the Guy working on the Boat he grabbed me and asked why I hit his Kid, I told him I didn't, the other kids said I didn't either, he replied, yeah... well.. and walked off, I carried on walking with my Nephew and looked back to see this Father punching the Kid. If this doesn't show the attitude today I don't know what does.

Kids litter, damage private property, bully kids, steal, lie, cheat and any other negative things because they either see it in the Home or if not at Home, they aren't told it is wrong to stop it in the future, contra to that Good Kids behave well due to good parenting, led by example, there are always those that are just "bad" and that's another story.

Don't think everyone will agree but our Leaders were kids, our teachers were kids etc, it is a very difficult cycle to change but still worth trying. I have to say, there have been a few members of this Forum that have either visited me or me them Kids in tow and ALL of them were well behaved and polite.

You'd have to be mad not to like a sense of calm and good.

The point I am trying to make is that Ego rules and ruins, there are forces out of our control but we need to control what is near to us and dear to us.

Re. Talking to Aliens in a universal Language.. we can hardly speak to each other, Korea, North and South springs to mind, they don't want to fix a beautiful Planet but want to think of going elsewhere, the Human response to problems seems to be to run.

Kev.
