Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

If you have somewhere to store it I'd say get it now, and don't forget to ask for ITFS discount too!

you have to be a member of the ITFS to get the discount. Membership is €10.00 or €3.00 for student or unwaged for the year. You will get a membership card which you may be asked to show in the shops. if you pm me i will send you a form or I can email it to you if you send me your email address

Ok so this is probably a wild shot. I'm planning on buying the Trigon 190 either Sunday or on Monday...I've managed to find a good source for the time being!! (thanks dad!!)

The 20% is open to all those purchasing off them at the moment. I know that my membership has been received by the ITFS so is there a number on my membership card that will allow me to avail of a further 10% on the order or is that possible? Since its the easter break I probably wont be able to contact them myself to get the answer so I hope that you guys can tell me!!

If I can get a 30% reduction I may be able to get a few more important stuff

Also, do you think that the play sand available in Smyths toy store is suitable for an aquarium? They sell a 15kg bag for about €3.50 so I'll be getting 30kgs of it so long as its suitable.

Regarding the sand,it should be ok,its what i use, just bought from elsewhere. One thing about it though, its generally very dirty,so needs a good wash.Do this outside, not over the sink or bath,I've known of dopes doing this and blocking the plumbing!

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I wouldn`t go near the sand. I bought it before and it is filthy. It is also very lite and takes ages to settle.

Thanks for the info lads, I have to say that I'm definately going to get sand for the tank, I saw Didihno's tank and I really want the sand...and a few albino corys. (they were great in his tank!!)

I've now decided to go for the Rio 300 for her house. It will be amazing. Planning on getting 2 TetraTec EX1200 filters too...should be able to get them for a fair price in England.

Do you think this tank needs that much filtration?

Always depends what you put into it. A lot of fish will need more filtration than just a few.

I've posted this somewhere before. B&Q own brand playsand is fine. So is lime free lawn sand

Don't be too disappointed if you aren't given the 10% members' discount on top of their 20% Easter offer...I may be wrong but I think the 20% overrides the other 10%.

I hope I'm wrong but I didn't get both discounts...no harm in trying all the same.

Ah...Ignore me...I just did the maths on my order and I am indeed getting a 30% reduction!!

I'll be ordering tomorrow!! :)

Its very tempting to add one of those Jinlong 1000 tanks to the order...get 50% off that one because its on special offer at the moment!! :) For this 210l tank it costs 231 euro and it includes the cabinet and a lighting hood.

Doesn't include filter but would be a nice tank for a small marine set up.

Jaysus you are going mad with the fishtanks!!!

It's an addictive hobby.
Especially with you being a dad and all that. (Tiger babies?!)

Haha, I wish!!

I had to settle on the Rio 180 for my sister as it was the only one that would fit her house but I was able to pick up a 96L quarantine/fry tank so i'm not too mad (just yet!! )

The hobby is certainly very addictive but its so nice to sit back and watch, the tv in our house is actually off most days now which is great!! :)

I think the eggs from the tiger barbs were eaten by the other fish in the tank, I'm not too disappointed as I'll transfer the barbs to the fry tank as soon as it comes and remove them once they drop their eggs in there. The females are still large so maybe it wouldn't be too long. If they do hatch and grow I'll be sure to offer you some Didihno when you get your tank set up in the new house.

Discounts are available in Tropical world (wackers), Aquatic village and petshoponline.
The discount is for members of the Irish Tropical fish society. NOT members of the forum.
Members are issued with a card they can use.
