Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Painted backgrounds

Took the big decision to paint the back of one of my tanks today.
Never did it before and was worried that if it looked wrong I wouldn't
be able to remove it.
Its only a 30 litre so thought i'd take the risk.
Well theres no water or anything in it yet but it looks great and i'd
highly recommend it to anyone thinking about it!
Just wish i'd been brave enough to do it to my 300 litre I set up 4
months ago.

Painted backgrounds can look great when done right :) fair play for giving it a go
What paint did you use? most would recommend acrylic as it adheres to glass with no problems.

Yeah used acrylic, was easier to do than I expected too.
Definitely recommend to try it.

I bought it in an Art & Hobby shop. Got a 400ml bottle for €6.99, plenty left too.
I did about 4 light coats and it looked good until I brought it inside to the light
and I could still see through it. So just put it back outside and gave it a few more
generous coats. Now it looks like the backgrounds you'd see in the tanks at pet
shops. Acrylic dries really quick too.

Its spray paint that I used its called "Gold Acrylic professional spray paint",
the place I went to just had the one brand so thats the one I used.
I didn't use that much, its 400ml and it still feels pretty full.
I gave it about 20mins between coats and every time it was dry to the
touch.
Thats weird I was using the tank as a shrimp tank but decided to change
it to a Mantis shrimp tank.
Yeah I cant imagine that the brace does too much for it and it would look
better as a rimless only id have to get a different lid for it cos my ones
knackered and it really stands out if I don't have the clearseal thing on
the top of the front panel.
Was your tank new when you took the brace off because I've had mine for
over 6 years. If I were to remove the brace I think I'd give the inside
another layer of silicone just in case.

Yeah might try removing the front brace at some stage if I can come across a nice lid or maybe make one.

Spray paint is all, looking closely I can see a good few kind of drip marks but they make no difference to
the look from the inside which is the main thing.
