Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

ok this is my second attemt at diy c02 i found that regulating the pressure is the key to half decent defusion, with my last go ive used super glue to stick hose connectors to the top of the soft drink lids, and this works fine once there is not much movement of the botttles, but having to replace the yeast and sugar mixture every two weeks or so i seem to break the seal and have to reseal again,so, being a plumber by trade i decided to put some of my skills to work,i got some metal air hose reg valves,PTFE tape, air hose line, bubble curtain, and fizzy drink bottles(your best bet is using fizzy drink bottles because there designed to hold pressure).

i rap the PTFE around the threaded end and screw it into the drilled lid for a good seal

here i drilled it twice, rapped the tape around the air hose and fed it trough the hole creating a good seal

PTFE tape
next i made up my mixture and let the pressure build up,when its up the air hose reg valves are very good of bleeding the c02 to the bubble curtain.

Hi Angelcichlid,

Moved to the correct category :)

looks a good set-up, very similar to one I used myself some time ago with great success. The one thing I did different was to use 2 bottles for the yeast culture. The advantage of this was that it allowed me to stagger the changing of the culture in the 2 bottles and therefor I had no interruption to the co2 supply. I found that I got an average of 4 weeks per culture so staggered them by 2 weeks and it worked out very well. Also used quick release pneumatic connector for the tube connections, so when any lines were disconnected, there was no loss in pressure from the system.

How long have you got the co2 set-up running? do you see any noticeable results on your plants?

The only disadvantage to the DIY system that I found was that the pressure was never high enough to run a proper diffuser. I experimented a bit with the best means of getting the co2 into the water. The best results I found was with using a flipper type diffuser with the end of the feed line blocked and pierced with several pin holes, resulted in very small bubbles running through the flipper and good levels of co2 dissolving into the water.

Definitely interested in hearing more on your progress and any modifications you may make to the system.

Cheers,

Bill.

cheers bill. I was using the venturi off a power head filter but as you know the c02 gas can eat away at the plastic and make it weak so i moved to a bubble ladder with pretty good results most of my broad leave plants took off. The thing is the steal reg valves on the new set up seem to be working a treat, with one on each bottle you can stagger the pressure going from the reactor to the washer bottle and then to the defuser(air curtain) and im getting mist, the bubbles are getting taken away by the flow of the filter so im getting a good spread trough the tank.
