Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello everyone, it`s been a while, busy with work but check in every now and then when I can
I still have 4 tanks up and running at the moment, two in the house and two have been moved to the shed.
Anyway, I have two questions, all my tanks are running well now on rainwater, something I have slowly changed to over the months and I just got the offer of a clean IBC, just wondering should I cover it to stop the sunlight, I was thinking of a Tarp or maybe just painting it black, or is there any need at all ???
My second question is, when I got home the other night my pond was almost empty, my wife tells me it`s been like that for a few weeks while I was away and they have filled it with water every few days.I`m looking for suggestions on how to find the leak and if found how to repair it

Hope you can help

Regards

Chris

Hello again Chris,
I would say the better idea would be the tarp - as long as you can make it secure against some of the 'angry' winds we sometimes have to endure,
Painting it would be, I think, a job that you would have to repeat quite regularly as the plastic the IBCs are made from doesn't really lend itself to being painted, so it would - I think - only be at best a temporary solution.
Of course, others may think differently, but if ever I get one (or more) that's what I shall do.
But either way I wouldn't leave it uncovered for fear of dreaded algae.
The pond might be a little more awkward, can you see the waterline the level dropped to? - It's obviously somewhere along this line that the leak is.
I'm assuming you have a liner in place? - There are repair kits available one you find the hole where water is leaking through.
If it's a concrete one you can buy a repair 'paint' I think it's called something like Aquaseal.

I hope you locate it successfully.

You might have to build a frame around the tank slabs of timber bark are 50 euro just a idea have you tryed the pump for your pond maybe it's leaking if it's the liner you can get a diy kit off eBay to patch the hole

Something fishie going on here
