Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Looking good especially the two walls built with the 4inch on flat for solid strength, for 100% peace of mind I would have ran the 4inch on flat around the other two sides especially against the 4 inch built on edge boundary wall.Is that wall tied into the shed wall which if it was would be on the plus side being a strengthener,if not I would get some heavy duty L brackets rawbolted to that wall inside the pond and the shed blockwork wall .Best of luck with your project....

Cheers.........I did some of the block building but after about 3 hours in my 'very professional' mate arrived and put the finishing touches to the block building and did all the plastering inside............he did say if I ever get fed up with chefing there's a job there being his labourer, which I was well chuffed with :)......now in saying that he said it with a bit of a grin on his face!!

There's an All pond solution filter rated for up to 5000L when fully stocked that also has an 11w uv steriliser that I was looking at.............I will also be putting a water feature on the shed wall, but a fountain feature i'm not sure of.

Cheers......the glass wall was thought about alright but I foreseen trouble down the road so went with the safer concrete option.

Cheers Man.........On the other side of that wall there is a concrete storage that is slightly higher than the pond.......they use to use it for storing coal but now everything and anything is in it.....very solid and she told me she has no desire to knock it down in the future and if she ever did I will be the first to know.

Ger , have a look at the aps box filter system , what i use is the 3 box systen with the 36watt uv on my pond 2500 litres . I have modified it by putting drains on each box , also removed the sponges from the last box and filled with 15 kg biohome ultimate media , pump is a hozelock aqua 8000 litres an hour so turning the pond over at about 3 times an hour , water is crystal clear . Its about 4 years old now think it cost around 400euro . The pond is overstocked but all ok . Its just a thought

Well that's a plus if it is built up as far as the shed in your neighbours side, are you lining that with a pond liner?if so it would allow for any slight settlement, or flex in that wall.

Ger , just had a look at aps website the bf 9000 is the filter i think you are talking about , my personnel opinion is that it isnt big enough for your pond , particularly if you are going for koi and an 11 watt uv will struggle to keep your amount of water clear particularly in the event of getting a good summer . Its just my opinion . Dont know where your based but i am in tallaght and your welcome to have a look at my system if you want . Robert

Ok another attempt at posting a pic (just the one this time but still not happening!!)

Anyway if John can sort it out 'Again' I put a slate along the top.......pic don't do it justice as there is a really nice grain going through it so well pleased with the finish.

The APS filter I was originally looking at was a PF-8000 but i'm now looking at the PF-12000...........Filter ratings are always exaggerated I know but this one says its suitable for ponds with heavily stocked Koi up to 6000L.......now as I have no plans to overstock the pond I think it will more than do the job for me.

I ordered lights the other day from England so I might have them by the end of the week or early next week..........they are a 4 piece spot lights with 36 LED in each so they should look good..........there is also a little over 4 foot between each light so they will be nicely spaced out aswell.

Once I get the equipment right I will be looking at plants and of course fish.........a Koi only pond was my initial thinking but I might leave that for a year or two and go with a mixed bag of fish for now......Comets,orfe etc,......we will see in the coming weeks how this pans out.

Also looking for suggestions on painting the inside? or should I leave it as is? cheers

Ger

I was thinking of just putting a clear sealant on it as I filled it to about a foot and the 'now' dark grey didn't look too bad...........black was always my first choice Al but a mate suggested aqua blue aswell so i'm not sure now.

hi Ger , glad you went for the bigger filter , I would paint the entire inside of the pond with G4 in black ,its brilliant stuff . two coats will do , the second coat has to go while the first coat is still tacky ,then allow at least 24hrs to dry . weather its goldfish or koi you will have to net the pond unless you want to feed the herons
