Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

so after a few eeks puttin everything together .... i thought i'd stick up this thread to tell of my adventures

a few weeks ago i got my hands on a free 2 kilo co2 fire extinguisher and my brain went into overdrive .... how could i turn this into a co2 supply for my planted tank .....

so here we go ....

enter one fire extinguisher ........... remove the horn with an adjustable wrench and voila .... one 2 kilo bottle of co2

now next thing i needed was a regulator to control the flow of co2 into the tank .... cos i didn't fancy blowing 50 bar pressure into the thing for fear of the ends blowing out

so i had a look around ebay and found the regulator i needed ...

so attaching it onto the same thread that the horn came off .... it looked like this

i then connected the hosing to the outlet on the regulator

and secured it with the supplied tightening nut ...

then came the final stage of the operation ... how to difuse the co2 into the tank ... so again with the help of ebay searches i found a nice glass difuser with a built in check valve

this was positioned inside the tank ... about 5 inches below the surface .....

i then installed a check valve onto the hose from the fire extinguisher to prevent any chance of blow back into the regulator

so when i had the whole thing done ... i pulled out the safety pin from the fire extinguisher and pressed the handles together ( ensuring the output pressure on the reg was turned right down ) before taping them in an open position ..

the result is a nice steady supply of co2 in the tank .... and hopefully it being a 2 kilo bottle ... should last me approx a year or so

please beware though ... dealing with high pressure gas bottles is slightly dangerous so i will accept no responsability for any damage or harm that befalls anyone interested in trying this

Duzzy is the tubing you are using designed for Co2? Normal airline tubing will quickly degrade and break with the Co2
