Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Has anyone got any tips on how to make my own lighting unit out of a juwel t5 setup.....?

I want to make a system were i can have low light ( the nature blub ) and then for extra light say in the evening time the ( day light blub )

The problem is the juwel T5 setup only comes with one switch which turns on both blubs id like to change this so i can have a choice of light settings.

Hi Alan
would you not consider adding in some LED bars..? I think you would have to dismantle your Juwel T5 light bar to add in a second switch for independant control of the 2 bulbs which could look unsightly and also be dangerous, have a look on ebay for ledstrips, which you can have on a seperate timer for moonlight phases ect.I've got some my self which I plan to use but the light bars are about 1mtr long and may need some work on them to get them to fit in I'll let you know how I get on with it all...;)

It really depends on where the switch is in the circuit.
As its Juwel I believe the switch will currently be between the mains plug and the light housing.
As the electricity is coming from the mains there needs to be a transformer to change it to the correct voltage and current. The transformer is in the light housing. So you've got something like this;
                                    /-------- Bulb
main ----- switch ----- transformer
                                    \-------- Bulb

To control the bulbs individually you'd need the switchs for the bulbs to be between the transformer and the bulbs.
Entirely possible but you'll need to be comfortable with hacking your light unit apart and cutting cables and maybe soldering things together.

If you're comfortable with that I'd say give it a go :)

I got diagrams of the lighting unit and the only problem seems to be with the placing of a new switch and keeping water off the new setup.

Then i thought of adding a single 3ft batton fitting like you put in ur bathroon and replace the tube......?

All i would have to do is remove the back lid of the tank and replace with my own housing and im done dont see much problems in doin that.....?

Lar on the leds never thought them they would save so much space and work i would have to change much if anything on the tank for the leds, lets us no how you get on with them and how much were they?

If you're just putting in the new switch then as you said there shouldn't be much trouble with it.
Keeping water from it shouldn't be much of an issue either. Cover it as much as you can with the orignal housing or your own makeshift one and fill the gaps with sealant. It should be fine. I've used Tec7 sealent in my lizzard tank and I've had no problems. Its solvent free and animal friendly. I'm sure it would be ok for aquarium use too (It has a picture of a fish on the tube!). I got it in B&Q but you can probably get it most places.

Im tinkin of just moving the switchs

mains to tranie then split to 2 seperate tubes

Just not sure on the wiring comming from the tranie think ill be getting on to juwel to see what they think and also can you remove everything from the housing without ripping things apart

If your hood already has a fitting for 2 bulbs thenthe circuit to each bulb will be supplying roughly the wattage of the bulb. The formulae you'll need are here; www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-ohm.htm

The hood I have on mine seems to have a panel glued into place on the top. Its probably accessible with the help of a stanley knife to cut through the glue. All the electrics should be at your fingertips then. With any luch you'll be able to put a hole through the plastic panel and mount the switches in it before you glue it back down.
